Quote of the Day: Unhappiness with Good News

“There are some Americans out there who are actually unhappy when what normal people would think of as good news is revealed. They are upset and even in denial when it turns out that a horrific gang rape at U. Va or by the Duke Lacrosse team never happened, or that a bunch of white kids didn’t surround and threaten a “Native American elder,” or that the Trayvon Martin case didn’t involve a white man shooting a black kid unprovoked, or that a deranged Israeli, not a dangerous white supremacist cabal, was responsible for a series of bomb threats to Jewish institutions, because they want reinforcement for their worldview that demands that the U.S. be a dystopian hatefest. These are some of the worst people in the United States.” – David Bernstein

We got some really good news yesterday: unemployment is way down.

Predictably, the usual suspects were unhappy about it. These are the same people who have been glorying in the chaos created in the wake of George Floyd’s death, cheering for Chicom Flu to kill millions, and demanding some US citizens kneel to other citizens.

We know what they are: wannabe tyrants that are trying to force us to abandon our liberties and our tradition of equality through making us feel guilty. Not guilt about actions we have taken and for which we are responsible. We are supposed to feel guilt about actions taken by other wannabe tyrants over whose actions we have no control. We are to assume collective guilt, a concept repugnant to human decency and the common law under which this republic was established.

Good news is anathema to these people. It cannot be weaponized.

    Petty, indeed.

These expressions of collective guilt coming from our universities and corporations are the scariest things I’ve seen.  The cultural revolution is here.  I’m expecting any day that I will be required to sign some sort of statement of guilt as a condition of employment.  Hope I’m wrong.

A sincere confession mitigates the sentence. You’ll be allowed to proceed to the basement of the Lubyanka as soon as you get that out of the way.

This may be a good time to remind Ricochet members of the 1984 Group content. You can get links to all of the Group Read analysis. As Instapundit would say, “1984 was supposed to be a cautionary tale, not a ‘how-to’ maul.” If you want to know what’s coming, read the book and read the commentary.

    Epstein didn’t kill himself.

No doubt some are. But I suspect the vast majority is composed of people who are addicted to outrage. They find meaning for their lives and confirmation of their self-worth in what they feel is righteous anger. It’s hard to give up meaning and self-worth for mere truth.

They refer to understanding as being “mugged by the truth” because mere suggestion, tugging, and shaking are not enough.
