Defining America
Well, since you asked, no.
Shame, that’s the word that comes to mind. It’s possible she’s proud of the people who burned down the neighborhoods because they’re taking direct action, forcing change, or just cutting right to the chase – and by “chase,” I don’t mean running after store owners and hitting them in the head with a crowbar to ensure compliance in the redistribution of his property.
But the looters and rioters and agent provocateurs, the nihilists, the louts and losers whose hearts and minds are numb to anything but the big boom, the hard jolt — that’s the cohort that some want to define America. After all, those pictures of people posing with heroic defiance as a building goes up in flames — why, it’s iconic! It sums up completely the American glorification of violence!
Eh.
Let this define America:
That’s maybe a 100th of what was delivered this morning at one of the food and staples drop-off centers that have sprung up around Minneapolis. It was massive — and this was the scene at noon. Wife and Daughter and Rotaria, our Spanish exchange student, went to deliver some goods this morning, and the line to contribute stretched for blocks and blocks. Swarms of volunteers moving the food from the boulevard to the truck; hundreds of people coming on food with bags. The grocery stores in our area have been cleaned out of food to donate — all the staples purchased and bagged for drop-off.
It was exhausting, but they came back renewed and happy. “What you have been seeing the last few nights,” I said to Rotaria, “that is not who Minnesotans are.”
“I know,” she said. “This is America.”
Sappy and simplistic, yes, but I’ll take it. That makes me feel proud.

This is true. One might say the same about a Smith & Wesson .38, which has enough resistance in the trigger to make to consider whether you really want to do this. At least the old S&W revolvers. So I’ve heard.
Thanks, Gh20. It’s been a quiet night. Social media sites abound with stories of strange vehicles and cached accellerants; we’ll see what the story looks like tomorrow. I think the miscreants have moved on to more exciting venues. Perhaps their work here is done.
Henry,
I really never thought I’d see the day when this kind of advice would be generally necessary. It’s that day.

Jim
Another avenue to take her to task with her misguided tweet: She wrote “…when Americans protest…”
I consider it journalistic malpractice when a news organization refers to this rioting and looting as a “protest” over the death of George Floyd. It is nothing of the sort. A march or rally in front of a city government building, the local police headquarters or the statehouse can be such a protest. This is not that. Violent mobs at the White House? Not related to George Floyd.
The reference to Carl Sandburg’s Chicago reminded me of one of my college professors, Doctor Bob — a old radio guy I had for several courses. One of Doctor Bob’s regular things was to grab a microphone and recite the opening lines of the poem in his “radio voice,” and he always paused at the same place: “City of the [dramatic pause] Big Shoulders!”
I’m sure Doctor Bob has long passed from this world, but I will always connect that poem with him, and pause at that spot in his honor.
Probably if Europe goes the way I think it will, she has a bolt hole to safety. Despicable, of course.
Liberté, égalité, auto-da-fé.
Henry,
Remember when “Choice of Weapons” by Gordon Parks was famous. A kid who could have gone the wrong way chose a camera instead of a gun. We still had hope then because people knew the difference between sanity and insanity. Certainly, the MSM has lost the ability to make this distinction anymore.
Now a choice of weapons looks more like this.
Five Great Firearms for Home Defense

As I’m in the middle of re-reading this book, her tweet doesn’t surprise me in the least. Nor does her enthusiasm for Russian Collusion, Infection Theater, or myriad other contagions of the modern and post modern mind.
Well said Mr. L.
All the long-time, since-forever anti-Americans are thrilled with how things are going, it seems. Ms. Berlinski identified her allegiances long ago in this space, for those who were reading. @DocJay wouldn’t have been surprised.
Me too.
James, James, James.
You must know that Goldwater would be AuH2O!
:-)
Wouldn’t that be AuH2O-XX?
AuH2O♀️
I have no idea how to get that symbol, but it looks good.
I doubt she wants to be considered/rated double-X.
Uh, no. How about just call me GWW?😁
Then again, Dos Equis – XX – is a Mexican beer. So don’t go being racist! :-)
