Uncommon Knowledge — Kicking And Screaming: WSJ’s Kim Strassel On The Media Vs. Trump

As a columnist for the Wall Street Journal and a commentator for Fox News, Kim Strassel is a card-carrying member of the mainstream media. But Strassel is appalled by the media’s treatment of Donald Trump, and not just by journalists from the left. She describes the “resistance” in detail in her recent book, Resistance (at All Costs): How Trump Haters Are Breaking America. She and Peter Robinson discuss the Trump administration’s handling of the COVID-19 crisis and the way the media has covered it and disseminated the information to the public. They also discuss the upcoming presidential election (yes, we are still having one) and the politics of the $2 trillion stimulus bill, with more spending on the way, and the realities of restarting the economy in a post- or partial-post-COVID-19 world. Finally, they discuss the pluses and minuses of Donald Trump’s temperament, and the possibility of something good coming from this current crisis.

Watched it, posted to Facebook.  And sent it to some of my Trump-hating friends.  Also tried to access some of her articles on WSJ.  But they are all behind the paywall and I’m a cheap sunnuvagun!

I’m glad Peter mentioned the connection between social ills (drug and alcohol abuse, suicide, domestic violence) and joblessness. It can’t be stated enough. Work is dignity.

Am I incorrect in thinking that the general argument against the President’s fitness to be the President (at least from his conservative critics) is especially weakened by the fact that none of them have admonished his willingness to go along bureaucratic know it alls? It would appear that there weren’t many principled conservatives to begin with. To my knowledge, Peter Hitchens is among the very precious few to make what strikes me as the argument that ought to be expected of a conservative with clear vision.

It’s been some time since you had a Hitchens on the show, Mr. Robinson. Might I float along a recommendation?

    Excellent interview as always!

Yes, You’re incorrect. The problem with bureaucratic know it alls, is that they well credentialed experts in their fields that have very little cross over to the private sector. So almost every politician would be out of their depth with a briefing on the statistical models of a pandemic. I think the real problem is that before the economy was shut down – there doesnt seem to have been a debate about the costs of that decision. Compounded by the need to be seen as proactive and decisive, led I think to a gross over reaction to this pandemic.

Of all the people who ran for president in 2016, I cant imagine any of them doing a better job than President Trump in this crisis. And I can imagine several doing considerably worse.

Good talk, I enjoy Kimberly Strassel’s reporting.

    Yes, You’re incorrect.

I’m not so sure. Saying that he’s done better than the other, pathetically green nominees he faced in 2016 doesn’t tell me that he’s done well. The tedium of adding a disclaimer that I voted for, will vote for again, and continue to support the leader of my country before making any point that doesn’t count in his favor is nearly as depressing as everything that’s transpired in the last eight weeks.

So even though I don’t disagree with you, I’m still unconvinced that I’m wrong. Perhaps conservatives aren’t as cold as the public had been led to believe, but maybe they aren’t as willful either.

I wonder how many of them are thinking, “Glad I dodged this corona bullet?”

We do not live in the best of all possible worlds.  We only live in the best of all available worlds.

Even if performance is sub-optimal, if it’s better than the set of other available options, we muddle along as best we can.

I think they where grateful for the alternative career path long before that. I think they’re glad to have dodged the media bullets. Look a Doug Ford, who was also hated by the media – to nearly the same degree as Trump is – and (I think) it killed Doug Ford. I believe literally the media hounded the man into an early grave.

    As predicted on this interview:

Illinois Democrats want over $10 billion to bail out their pension system. I think in aggregate Illinois is 43% funded.

    The article is very short.
