Conservative Swamp Creatures
Listening to a podcast by Jonah Goldberg it suddenly dawned on me why the guy is skeptical of Trump. As he said on the podcast, he has lived in Washington D.C. most of his life. He worked in think tanks there for years and all of his friends are government or political wonk types. He goes to all the big insider parties and functions. Most of the guests he has on the podcast are DC insiders, often second or third generation Swamp Creatures. He’s a Swamp Creature.
I have no doubt that he’s conservative and smart, but apparently he’s a Swamp Creature first and foremost. In fact, after a little research, I found that many of the other prominent conservative Trump skeptics are similar. They’ve been in and out of government in DC and/or work in this or that conservative think tank or publication. I expect that their first loyalty is to the place from which they draw their sustenance. Any threat to that is going to evoke a visceral reaction. And we all know what Trump promised to do and is doing with the Swamp.
First comes the emotional reaction, then there follows the rationale for it. With time this rationale becomes more elaborate, and what you’re left with at the end are conclusions that make no sense. So you have Bill Kristol saying that Trump has turned him into a Democrat. Editors of the Bulwark are advocating for a third-party candidate and David French is saying that Christians should not vote for Trump. This against the most firmly conservative, effective, and anti-abortion president ever.
Some of them say that Trump is an “existential” threat to the country, and he is in fact a threat to what they hold dear, but under Trump, the rest of the country is doing fine.
I’m not sure how fond of democracy any of these guys ever were, but increasingly they are open about being skeptical of it, and that’s apparently because democracy and the people have turned against the Swamp. And let us remind ourselves about why this has happened — the Swamp failed a large number of the American people. Washington insiders have contempt for ordinary Americans, and their policy preferences show it. Free trade and relatively open borders, among other things, boosted the economy and made Swamp Creatures and their friends rich and powerful. Ordinary Americans suffered from a loss of jobs and income, depression, dislocation, drug abuse, and suicide. The people have pushed back against Creature policies. This the conservative Swamp Creatures deride as populism and warn of mob rule, but instead of picking up pitchforks the people elected Donald Trump and most likely will do so again.

Not so sure The Dispatch is Buckleyite. WFB was rather famous for advising people to vote for the most conservative candidate that was most likely to get elected. Instead many of the Dispatch people threw their vote away with vanity vote for Mullen or similar while in the current cycle many of them seemed to be actively pulling for Biden or Klobuchar as a viable and good alternative to Trump. How is ANYONE in the Dem primary even remotely conservative? Trump may or may not be personally conservative but he has enacted more conservative policies than ANY Dem is ever likely to do – or most current Republicans, either. I would prefer a bit more “class” and “style” in the White House but will settle for good Judges, tax policy, regulation reform, immigration enforcement, etc.
I am bigotted against deep swamp creatures, especially if they live in the deep swamp and call us deplorable. You got a problem with that? Some of my best friends are swamp creatures, but I believe in treating with disdain the class to which they belong.
Not just the meme, but also the actual chaos.
Agreed.
But to this day the MSM holds onto the meme of ongoing “Chaos in the White House” as if it is simply organic to anything Trump, while purposely looking the other way to well documented acts of sabotage within the Trump Admin(ie: Comey. McCabe, Yates, Ciaramella, Vindman, Attkinson, …. I could go on).
There would at least be far less “Chaos in the White House” if there were not saboteurs intentionally creating Chaos in the White House for the purpose of creating the Chaos in the White House meme to try and damage Trump’s ability to govern and to hurt Trump politically for the 2020 election.
I read his stuff and never fail to learn something by doing so.
You can then basically say the same thing for a lot of Ricochet members here. A lot of use voted and will vote for him again, don’t think he is a conservative, he is moral repugnant, personally can’t stand him, and thinks he done a decent job as president. We can actually separate someone personality from their Job skills, especially when compared to the other options.
This hero worship of British Royalty, Kobe Bryant, Obama and Trump (ict) I find morally pungent, regardless of who its coming from. All these Ricochet hero worship trump pieces published here. Is why I don’t spend much time here anymore. So few articles of substance anymore. Rank idol Punditry is just boring. One can only take so much of it.
Also, don’t get me wrong about the only thing Obama is superior than Trump on was his personal life morality. Then again this is nothing new for lefties when compared to someone with Trumps personal life style.

The Ricochet hero worship trump pieces are evidently all hidden in plain sight behind the straw men.
Of course Ricochet hero worship Trump pieces would be very easy to run across when “I don’t spend much time here anymore”.
