Chiefs Defeat 49ers in Super Bowl LIV
At the start of the fourth quarter, the San Francisco 49ers lead the Kansas City Chiefs 20-10. Then they decided to relax. The Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs roared back with 21 unanswered points, winning the game 31-20.
Congratulations to coach Andy Reid, and all the loyal Kansas City fans who have waited 50 years to get back to the Super Bowl.
I’m a Packers fan, so I didn’t have a dog in the hunt. I was pulling for the Chiefs but predicted a three-point victory for the Niners. What were your thoughts on the game?

I was glad to see the Chiefs win. Mahomes seems like a good kid.
Mostly I wanted the whiners to lose.
For a game I didn’t see or follow it was amazing. I was particularly impressed by that one kick and then when the guy ran with the ball and the other guy ran after him and then it stopped and we got commercials that was like wow amazeballs! Then two old ladies sang or so I read on a website, and then they played football in between the replay clips, commercials, and people standing around waiting for the game to start up again. It was everything I could want.
I was pulling for the Niners, but I was glad it was a good game.
I thought it was a good game. I’m jealous of the person whose job it is to notice things like: “This was Andy Reid’s 222nd head-coach career win, and it happened on 02022020.” I wish I’d had the sort of job where I was responsible for digging up bits of trivia like that, so it could be reported on national television, instead of the sort of job where my pager went off at 3AM to tell me that the roofing membrane between two up-against each other buildings had let go and there was three inches of water in the Operating Room server closet, and all the equipment was either dead as the proverbial dodo, or putting out twelve-inch sparks, and what should they do until I could get there?
I was also suprised to hear that Andy Reid has only been a head coach for 21 years. Seems like he’s been around at least twice that long.
Glad to see Coach Reid able to enjoy this moment. He and his family have been through much personal anguish. And great to have the Lombardi trophy return to the Midwest. Well done Chiefs!
I’m in Kansas City, and not a big sports fan – but just like the Royals win a few years back, having your local team win is awesome! Tons of local businesses closed today so employees could go home and watch the game.
That having been said, even though there’s a big picture window in my office on the second floor of a building looking down right on the route the parade is going to take…I think I’ll work from home that day. I really don’t like crowds! But I may have to change my mind. It will be a pretty special day.
If your bladder wasn’t completely emptied by that, I have another bowl of corn flakes you might wish to use. ;)

That’s great, but who are the Chefs?
The Drudge Report doesn’t even mention a winner. He always seems like a huge football and Super Bowl fan to me. I guess Matt really isn’t around anymore.
I was OK, not necessarily delighted, with any team that was not the Packers. Next in undesirability would be Dallas, a New York team, da Bears, a California team (San Diego would have been OK before they threw a Spanos temper tantrum and moved to LA).
Under that rule, I was for KC; a flyover state beating the Nancy Pelosi PC’s is a pretty good outcome.
I was pulling for the team most likely to show up at the White House. I think I won!
San Fran has their five Super Bowl titles, and this was their seventh appearance compared to just the third for the Chiefs, and none since the current AFC-NFC divisional arrangement was set, so I was rooting for K.C., but was afraid the Niners would win because historically, defense + running game has won the Super Bowl. So happy to see the end result — though if this is 2035 and the Chiefs are about to win their sixth or seventh Super Bowl with Mahomes, I might be singing a different tune.
The game was good, but I spent the entire second half wondering how female empowerment is advanced by scantily-clad superstar singers bumping and grinding with a cast of a hundred dancing men.
They liberated themselves from good taste.

I was hoping they’d win and they did. It was an enjoyable evening, despite the pornographic halftime show.

I really like the ReadyKilowatt icon. It seems like just yesterday when the KC Chiefs beat the Minnesota Vikings. No wait, that was 50 years ago!
I deliberately missed the halftime show and instead took the time to make dinner for my son, take out the garbage, clean up the kitchen and clean out my cat’s litter box. A much more important use of my time.
BTW – Someone should have told J-Lo that Puerto Ricans are American citizens and immigration for them is not a concern…but whatever…after all, Ms. Lopez also was bowled over in a movie when she received a first edition of Homer’s Iliad. (I never grow tired of this video):
I enjoyed the game. I did pre-record the game, and waited 1 hour before starting to watch it. I skipped the commercials and the half time show.
I did end up catching up a little sooner than I’d like, so I paused for another 15 minutes, before watching again, skipping more commercials.
I’m not a fan of any particular NFL team, but I was rooting for Andy Reid so the team I was rooting for won.
I also enjoyed the horse racing aspect of it, with the Chiefs being 10 points behind at the beginning of the 4th quarter, and then winning by 11 points. Come from behind games like that seem to be a specialty of the Chiefs, from what the commentator was saying.
One thing I noticed during the awarding of the trophy. The last few years, they’ve lined up the team on both sides of the route the trophy would take to the stand where it would be awarded, while the players touched the trophy as it went by. It would be carried by a member of the NFL Hall of Fame.
I always thought that walk by the trophy was kind of silly and phony.
They didn’t do it this time, or if they did, it was done during a commercial break. Glad they stopped.

Yes, there was a point when I thought the 49ers had taken control. Mahomes was looking shaky and it looked like the 49ers were going to push it to a 3 possession lead. And then the roof fell in (figuratively) and you were seeing the Chiefs of the playoff runs. It was pretty astonishing. A lot of people thought it would be a higher scoring affair. But 51 pts just fell short of the line of 53. Las Vegas knows what it is doing:
But the way the game played out I think most of the “over” betters were assuming their bet was lost when the teams were 10-10 at halftime. That it even got close to the line was a bit of a fluke.
As is my SOP I recorded the game OTA, started watching an hour after kick off time, FF through commercials and only watched FOOTBALL. At halftime I was too close to real time to simply skip the halftime falderal so we watched a recorded episode of The Andy Griffith Show instead, then returned to the game. By this crazy work around, we were able to watch the second half in peace, without being insulted into buying inane products (!?) and greatly enjoyed seeing the Chiefs (love that unwoke name!) do a third impossible comeback routine to complete a playoff run of, “Wow, can they really DO that?”
Before the game all the ‘experts’ predicted that SF would control the ball with their running game keeping Mahomes on the sideline and wearing out the KC defense to the point that there could be no comeback victory for KC. It is sweet to see them all proven 100% wrong once again.
Mahomes is phenomenal and he will have a good run, BUT the other teams in the NFL will figure out how to counter him before long. They always do because that is their job. I plan to enjoy watching him and the line, receivers and running back that make it all work for the near term. There are no dynasties or super stars, that is just hype but when someone comes along with a new twist and has great success it’s fun to watch.
Why would any sane person watch that? We didn’t (see earlier comment.)
The Super Bowl isn’t for football fans anymore. It’s now a vehicle to run an obnoxious volume of commercials.
That’s why God gave us DVRs with a FF button ;>)
There was a great picture of 96 year old Bob Dole at the game! He had been there 50 years ago when the Chiefs last won the Super Bowl IV.
