Contributor Post Created with Sketch. Students in Tehran

If there’s one thing about Iran you were told was impossible, by both conservatives and liberals, it’s this:

These are times of great danger for Iranians, hundreds or thousands of whom have already been attacked and murdered by the regime for protests. The regime looks very weak now.

Honestly, it surprises me that hatred of the US and Israel is so formalized. That’s a form of indoctrination I didn’t expect.

You have to do that, when you can’t convince them of your truth.

If you have read Mark Bowden’s book, “Guests of the Ayatollah,” you might recall the last chapter when he visits the old American embassy, now a museum. As he left the building, having finished his tour, the guards sitting out side gave him a “thumbs up” and said “George Bush.” This was after Bush invaded Iraq. The hostility of the people outside the mullahs and the IRGC, has been gone for years.

… and it isn’t working. For Khamenei and his minions, that is very bad news.

Even if I’m not a die-hard Trump fan, he’ll have a street in Tehran named after him before Oblahblah does.

It’s hard to know what this means. Were these there for a long time and just suddenly people stopped walking on them? Or were they just added last night? Something newly created just might cause respectful people not to tread on it.

More importantly, he’ll deserve it. He’s done a good job of supporting the Iranian freedom movement while being hard on the Mullahs that are responsible for their persecution and murder. A part of me can’t believe I’m saying this but he is Reaganesque when it comes to Iran.

They should have lined up and “greeted” them when they stepped off the flags…..

    Morning Titus,

This is a tea leaves question. When the Soviet Union fell, I was surprised, I thought it would last my lifetime. Looking back one can see, that the population at all levels knew that the system was corrupt, dead, hollow, weak, do you think that the population in Iran have the same views? It is hard to sustain a system that everyone knows is rotten, has Iran come to a point where its fragility has become more clearly understood?

    Afternoon, Jim!

The adequately informed man–not the expert–should have known that the USSR was in danger of collapse. Of course, the American press is always busy lying to the nation about matters of foreign affairs (not only, but especially), & on both sides, if in different ways. That’s part of the price paid for freedom of speech…

But the danger of collapse is now & then averted–knowing the obvious does not suffice for judgment.

As to your question, I’m not an expert on Iran, so I can only say two things. First, the Iranians are not prisoners of the regime exactly. There is quite some legitimacy to the regime–apart from its propaganda, which obviously isn’t very effective. Iranians really do seem to dislike America, if not the way the regime does. The gossip or opinionating I read suggests, America is not a model of freedom or democracy, the coming future, for aspiring Iranians.

Secondly, the protests that started in November have become more & more serious because the regime is now uniquely incompetent. They have killed perhaps 1,500 people already without putting an end to the matter. The protests in themselves were not dangerous to the regime, only to its pride, nor yet the fact that communications escaped control. The regime has a useful ally in the left-wing media in the West & no enemy in the right-wing media. The corrupt & the mindless can shake hands on this issue… So also China is an useful ally. But it was a terrible mistake to resort to slaughter. It is no longer possible for Ayatollah Khamenei to consolidate his position or strengthen Iran as the dominant Middle Eastern power. I don’t think the regime will fall, because Americans are too incompetent about foreign affairs. I certainly hope & believe there will not be another American invasion in the Middle East in the next decade… But it will be a weak regime, one without an heir, & there will be serious change sometime soon, because government is not improving. The change, however, will not be in the direction of democracy or the West, to judge by what we can now know.

That’s a preposterous supposition. Almost no one expected it when it happened.

Perhaps you don’t know what a supposition is & you have misread what I wrote. Do read that paragraph again–I think we have a misunderstanding here.

    Morning Titus,

The pastor at our church has said that Babylon Bee is one of his favorite spots, of course he imbeds references to LOR in every sermon as a nod to his wife.
