Christmas Table and Door at Kujawas’
This is a picture of our table for Christmas dinner. Boneless ribeye roast (cooked by me), garlic mashed potatoes (cooked by Ray), 2015 Reininger Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon. Apple pie with French vanilla ice cream for dessert.
And here is a picture of the door to our garage, with all of our Christmas cards displayed. Not all are Ricochet cards, but the majority are. Every one received goes up on the door. We keep this up all year long, to remind us of our Ricochet family.

We had dinner at my mom’s house and decided to have a Greek feast this year. We had pastitsio, kota riganati, spanakopita, Greek-style potatoes, and a Greek garbanzo salad. Dessert was not Greek. Sarah made a gingerbread roll with an eggnog sauce. It was awesome. Maybe I can talk everyone into Moroccan next year.
Can anything good come from there?
It ain’t like it’s Nazareth or something.
MrsCheese broke her arm 12 weeks ago today and was on the injured reserve list for Thanksgiving but she came back with a vengeance yesterday. She made a standing rib roast and lobster tails, you guessed it cheesy creamy potatoes, maple syrup rainbow carrots , homemade dinner rolls and cheesecake for dessert . Two kids and two grandchildren also enjoyed. BTW we had our Grand Marnier fruit cake. No driving after two portions.
It wasn’t just the table that was groaning by the end of the meal, I’m guessing.
Friends hosted Christmas dinner, centered around a smoked turkey, perfectly done. The rain had stopped early in the afternoon, so the evening weather was perfect for sitting out around a fire pit after dinner.
You are spot on. The big eater yesterday was the eight year old grandson. Skinny as a rail to boot. We had so much fun. Two of our kids had a brother/ sister 3 day trip to Vegas last week . Loved the stories.
The wines of Walla Walla command a price premium over WA state wine from Columbia Valley. It’s my favorite wine region. The fortunate happenstance result of some major terra forming in the aftermath of the last ice age. Which is another way of saying the great wines we have in South East and Central Washington state are the result of global warming. But don’t tell any liberals that; you might trigger them.
Pretty much everything coming out of the Walla Walla valley is overrated!

Mrs. Gromrus made marinated, roasted pork tenderloins which were scrumptious. I made the au gratin potatoes with cheeses from our Wisconsin relations. You may or not realize that American made gruyere cannot be labeled gruyere thanks to the EU clamping down on the use of European names of our cheeses (https://www.politico.com/agenda/story/2016/06/european-union-trade-cheese-geographical-indicators-000141). I can tell you, however, that Wisconsin Roth Grand Cru Alpine style cheese is as good as any European gruyere IMHO.
I don’t have an opinion on ratings, I see the price as other people liking the taste as I do. I didn’t drink wine much at all before RB and I began exploring WA wineries and I found some in Walla Walla that have become my favorites.
(Blech) Please not while I’m eating.
Argh. I am from Walla Walla…I was being self-deprecating!
That said, I don’t think the Walla Walla wines are any better necessarily.
It is fun to go home and experience the place as a tourist destination, however!
I had raised a bit of Cain with my elderly aunt and uncle, who are in their 90’s and cling to having the holiday meal with grips of iron. I reminded them that they have done it for 70+ years and my husband and I, in 23 years of marriage, have only hosted Christmas 5 times. (Those dinners, if I can pat myself on the back, were well-received, “fancy” meals*, planned for weeks.) They agreed to let me cook.
Beware of getting what you ask for! I came home from a cruise in late November with a bad cold that got worse and lasted until a few days before Christmas. So the plans were scaled back (or rather didn’t have a chance to be made in the first place.) I made a wonderful homemade tomato soup that is one of my go-to’s, chicken tetrazzini, and a mixed green salad with homemade citrus dressing. Dessert was a rum pound cake that a dear friend makes for us every year.
Aunt, Uncle, and cousin professed themselves delighted. And they each had second helpings. I’m glad I did it, but there were a few times leading up to the day, that I mentally kicked myself as I lay collapsed on the sofa, coughing and sneezing.
*Pork Osso Buco, Crown Rib Roast, Filet of Beef Bourguignon, etc.
