Trump shocks black voters — by trying to get their votes

Trump’s reelection team actually has a strategy to increase their percentages among African Americans … and it is freaking people out. You want to know why the left is so mad at Kanye supporting Trump? This is why.

I personally think it’s a great idea. If Trump can move from 8 percent to the teens or higher, he will win in 2020 going away. Keep hammering away at the African-American unemployment rate. Ask them who actually represents their best interests, both economically and socially. The economy, criminal reform, support for black colleges, pro-life agenda … those things all work with African American voters. Make the argument.

I hope Trump develops some inroads into winning more African American & Hispanic voters. The economy & jobs alone should be helpful. I need to hear more about the school voucher idea (#5). It sounds promising.

Trump should explicitly say that if he and GOP Congress get half the black vote he can do it in 100 days.

Because think about it. Every Republican in the country is going to be in a black neighborhood the next day saying, “Excuse me, uh, Sir, what can I do for you that will make you think about voting for me again next time”. And every Democrat will be there saying, “Guys! What happened? I thought we were buds!”. The answer to both of those questions is School Choice.

And in one election, blacks go from being the most irrelevant demographic to the most important. And they can dangle this for at least several cycles, getting one policy after another passed, as long as they are policies that would benefit others besides themselves. School choice yes, reparations no.

If black voters can come to grips with the simple fact that they are part of everybody, meaning a policy that’s good for everyone is good for them, they can rock the political foundations of this country for a generation.

I love the idea but are you certain Trump can follow through on that promise? Aside from the cost how can he bypass Congress?

He doesn’t need to.  The Dems will be desperate enough to get those votes back that they will tell the Teacher’s Unions, a.k.a. the only people in the country who don’t want it, that they have to take one for the team.  Because while the teachers give money and organization, there are far more black voters than teachers.  Both parties will come together to do it because both will see it as the key to electoral survival.

Oh, and there is no cost.  Simply mandate that the states distribute the funding that they raise along with the federal dollars they get.   Won’t cost one penny extra.

The thing is that Trump is Trump. His GOPness is a less quality for him. The black community has been just fine with Trump for decades, they sang songs with his name in it. They gave him awards. Their guys buddied up with him. They took his money. Then Trump runs as GOP and Democrat Inc tells black you can’t like Trump anymore. There has to be more than a few people that don’t like being pushed like this and maybe break ranks a bit.

Trump’s flashy style has served him well in terms of that image being baked into the pop culture after 40 years in the spotlight, and having people write songs about him because of his flashy style. The irony here is the same style that could make inroads in the black community is also what some Trump-adverse people detest — the braggadocio, the hype, the open feuds/airing dirty laundry in public. For people who like their GOP politicians in the more staid Mitt Romney type of persona, whatever Trump does often takes a back seat to who he is, yet who he is could earn him a lot more black votes in 2020 than Mitt Romney could ever have gotten.

It would be silly to say that Trump is ‘black’. But he isn’t especially ‘white’ in behavior, by which I mean WASPy and Brahmin-like. Elitist.

It is true that when a Democrat gets elected the media says the citizen class is wise and good and they have rejected the party of hate! and when a Republican is elected the media says “the voters had a temper tantrum.”

Trump’s style is very urban, outer-borough NYC, and really hasn’t changed all that much since he hit the spotlight in 1977. And 42 years ago, it was the elites of Manhattan and the city’s politicians he railed against in the pages of Rupert Murdoch’s newly-acquired New York Post. The bridge-and-tunnel message of then has translated over to Flyover Country, and it’s a message that resonates with a lot of urban blacks  (so it’s fitting Trump’s dad’s historical plaque in Queens is right under the el that carries the J-Z trains):

It would be fun to see Trump canvassing black neighborhoods, going door to door to black businesses. The left would go out of its mind. Take Kanye with him, maybe, but it’d be more fun to see him alone, connecting with people.

Blacks intuitively know Trump is no racist.
One thing Trump has been doing right ( very right) is to ignore race completely ( other than referring to low AA unemployment) which to me was striking for a politician and works very well over time. Mentioning race has an undercurrent effect of separating people into categories reinforcing the existing narrative, so when the pol mentions  “ inclusion” of black and brown people he’s highlighting the concept of differences. Trump never does that (except when citing unemployment stats).

His whole concept is we are all Americans, and if you are an American, he’s your advocate. America ( and Americans) First! This is actually one of the great things about America. That anyone can be American.

Insulting a farmer. In Iowa. A state where s sizable percentage of the voting pool either farms now or are descended from farmers.

In 2014 in the race for Tom Harkin’s seat, Bruce Braley was running for the Senate against Joni “Make Em Squeal” Ernst, who made no secret of her farm roots. Braley appeared at a fundraiser before a bunch of trial lawyers and said that it was important for Democrats to retain control else the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee would go to Chuck Grassley who was characterized  as just some farmer, not even a lawyer.

Braley’s poll numbers took a swan dive and never recovered.

I remember that well.  Trial lawyers are an interesting voting block. I have a son who is one and is a fan of Gavin Newsom, or was last time we talked.  I cannot figure out why.  I do have one experience that helps. I was once a witness for a lawyer defending a man who had shot a guy he found in bed with his wife.  Long story that is in my Memoir book. Anyway, one tactic he used was to keep continuing the trial until he got the affirmative action Hispanic deputy DA as prosecutor. He explained “I’m a bleeding heart liberal; but this is business.”

Which is a disaster for Dems.

Republicans have long assumed that black votes will automatically go to the Democrats. They barely even try. But President Trump didn’t just write them off, and he’s made inroads.

@drewinwisconsin, I heard that 35 percent number too did that seem valid?  What I immediately thought was that even if it’s half that it’s still a huge deal

I was going to say two different recent polls put him at 35%, but a little web search shows that it’s actually three. (Emerson and Rassmussen were the two I’d heard about. I didn’t realize a Marist poll had the same.) And even a CNN poll puts him at 26% with non-white voters.

I think it’s because Republicans tend to take more of a dim view of outlandish damages awarded by juries, and have put caps on them at times. The Dems are just all “Sky’s the limit!”  Republicans, being more fiscally responsible, don’t like to encourage litigiousness. We also don’t like defense lawyers trying to get rapists off by claiming their parents never got them a pony.

On the topic of trial lawyers, I tend to agree about the damages issue.  I did quite a bit of expert witness work in the later years of my practice. I reviewed hundreds of cases and did probably 50 depositions and a dozen trials.  I worked for both sides, plaintiff and defense.  The two cases where I found the lawyer lying were both defense lawyers.  I would review cases for plaintiff guys and would sometimes say, “I can’t help you. Your client is an idiot (usually a more polite term) but most of the time they would drop the  case.  A few would go to another expert.

I got sued once (that went to court) and the “expert” the plaintiff lawyer used was a well known crook.  It was a thyroid case of a huge goiter in an asthmatic.  He had a respiratory arrest post op in ICU and I got there fast enough to do a trach but he never woke up.  Sad case. Very high risk.  The “expert” the plaintiff hired testified that he always left his thyroid surgeries with an endotrachial tube in place all night after surgery and not to do so was malpractice. This, of course, is nonsense and the lawyer representing me asked the judge to have the man provide the records of one case in which he had done this.  His response was that all his records had burned up in a fire and his nurse, who could remember the cases, had died.

Hiring liars for your experts can get expensive.  Of course, class action cases  mostly have liars as plaintiffs.  One plaintiff lawyer I knew in Alabama told me his partners told him they wanted to quit accepting all med-mal cases after the famous BMW paint job case.  That case, with an outrageous jury verdict, had poisoned the jury pool in Alabama where lawyers  could not get juries to find for plaintiffs.

    https://www.nytimes.com/1995/10/14/opinion/bmw-s-2-million-paint-job.html
