Post Hoc, Ergo Propter Hoc, Seattle?

That phrase is commonly called a fallacy (“after this, thus because of this”), but you can judge this instance for yourself, with a couple of stories from KOMO-Seattle.

First, there is this story about the low morale at the Seattle Police Department. In recent years, there has been an increase in low-level street crime, and many cases of neighborhood-dwellers who shout and jeer at police officers while they are trying to do their job. The incidents in Ferguson, MO, and the rise of the “Black Lives Matter” movement have led to distrust of the police, and the feeling in some communities that the police do not serve them, but are a threat. The city government has not dealt well with the rise of homeless and drug-dealing people living in broken-down, unsightly RVs in city neighborhoods, among other things. Some neighborhoods have to hire their own private security when the City ignores their plight.

Then, there is this story of how one local company has responded to the conditions above. Street Crime Forces Environmentally-conscious company to Flee Seattle. Seattle prides itself on being very “green,” funding companies such as this one, banning those evil plastic bags and plastic straws, and building street-narrowing bike and bus lanes where automobiles are not allowed.

In these cases, Post Hoc, Ergo Propter Hoc is not a fallacy, but very true.

We know what you mean.  And we know you mean well.

That is all for now.  We will work on this Monday morning in Logic.

The police are not stupid.  The LAPD trains new recruits who then move to sane suburbs and work at better conditions and often pay.  This is an old story.  The trouble now is that sane suburbs are getting rare in CA.

I am all for Logic. But I find that generally speaking, Mondays are a bad day for it.

We attended a Children’s Hospital Celebration of Life Saturday at the Denver Zoo. I was almost immediately irritated by the wokeness of the place when we walked through the entrance and saw the sign, “All Gender Bathrooms” just inside. Then we went to buy drinks and it turns out they won’t provide lids or plastic straws with your flimsy paper cup. You have to buy the pricier more robust souvenir plastic cup for those.

So, you have all these kids wandering around the zoo who are either survivors of cancer or are in treatment who can’t be sure they’ll be with their own or the opposite sex in the bathrooms, and have to fight off the yellow jackets at every food stand just to get a drink — if the cup doesn’t collapse.

I’m not sure which ocean we’re supposed to be saving here in landlocked Colorado by banning plastic straws and lids! Honestly, a world gone this mad deserves a comeuppance. Common sense is dead. All hail the Age of Fake Virtue.

I rarely fly anymore but the last time I walked through LAX, they still had men’s and women’s toilets.  Then I think there was a third option. Can’t recall the term.  LA may be corrupt (They have now banned Uber from the airport) but they have not gone all transgender crazy.
