I’ve been saying for a couple decades that doing business with China is like being married to the mob. It’s a deal we could never get out of, no matter how bad it gets. I predicted that if the US and China ever had a serious disagreement, we would always lose out in the end because a trade war would result in our businesses screaming bloody murder to our politicians to give in, while China’s leaders would happily allow millions to starve.
Trump’s methods give me hope that I have been wrong. I would love to be wrong on this one.
I like your analogy about being “married to the mob.” There must be other better countries out there that can fill the trade and manufacturing role China has been playing. I’d rather be dealing with them. However, I agree with the cartoon that Trump is hurting our own economy with his tactics of arbitrary tariffs.
