You Can’t Throw Money at the “Problem”
Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle are in hot water with the British press this week because of a series of jaunts the pair took on a private plane to celebrate Markle’s 38th birthday. Despite being vociferous climate change activists, the pair flew on their own private transportation four times in just eleven days. Entertainer Elton John is coming to their defense,
I am deeply distressed by today’s distorted and malicious account in the press surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s private stay at my home in Nice last week. pic.twitter.com/WjVRDSMX0z

To support Prince Harry’s commitment to the environment, we ensured their flight was carbon neutral, by making the appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint™.

Basically, John threw money at the problem, hoping that it would excuse the trip in the eyes of the public and soothe Harry’s conscience. It’s an utterly ridiculous way rich folks not wanting to give up their jet-set lives can have their cake and eat it too. Harry and Meghan didn’t take a trip to raise awareness of one of their pet causes or go visit a sick grandmother; they were just on a holiday.
While Harry and celebrities like him can hardly hold their climate hysteria in check:
It would be a lot easier to take their concern at face value if they practiced what they preached just a little bit.

But… if you want to throw money at my problems I won’t object.
Just sayin’.
Same here EJ and I am my own biggest problem.
To quote the great Glenn Reynolds, “I’ll believe it is a crisis when those telling me its a crisis act like its a crisis.”
I wish I had a piece of Carbon Footprint™. Taking money from the poorly-educated. What a racket.
Agree completely @davidknights. These people should not only not be getting in planes (private or otherwise) but no other form of transport allowed except walking. I mean we only have 12 years or 8 years or something. Don’t get me started on Greta Thurman – really, kids taking off Fridays to protest and not flying is supposed to solve this grave problem??
It’s selling indulgences all over again.
According to one story I read, Thurberg’s “carbon free” trip requires three trans-atlantic flights to ferry crewmembers between Europe and the US, as well as a powered chase boat “in case of emergency”. In other words, if she’d just taken an economy-class flight it would have resulted in fewer CO2 emissions.
I don’t remember where I read it, so take this report with a grain of salt.
Beat me to it!
Elton may not have said it himself, but he’s part of the class of people who have lectured others for years about the joys of teleconferencing and telecommuting in the video era. The point is always being made to the proles that you don’t have to go anywhere and pollute the atmosphere in your car or in a jet — you can stay at home and get the same amount of work done.
You can’t make those statements and think that, and some tax-deductible contribution to an environmental group, is going to give you Carte Blanche to never change your lifestyle, no matter how well you think Al Gore sold carbon offsets as some form of Gaia-friendly absolution.
It’s funny how these elites are pummeled in the press for their jet travel, but not the rest. I think it’s more of an anti-American (Markle) protest . . .
If I give money to the American Cancer Society can I smoke in public because offsets make my secondhand smoke cancer neutral?
If I give money to a recycling company can I litter in the park because my offsets make it pollution neutral?
Or does this offset racket only apply to people who can afford private jets?
If I give money to the SPCA for My offense offset, can I call a chick a dog?
The ‘Queen’ saves the Prince.
Snake oil salesmen have been doing it for centuries.
Can I speed because I pay taxes that go to build roads?
If I play music at my house loudly at 3:00AM, do I just throw a $20 on my neighbors’ doorsteps the next day?
If I murder Vince Foster, roll him up in a rug, drag him through a park and dump him in a culvert, do I collect millions in campaign donations and then fail to become president?
Oh, wait, my bad. Not sure the last one applies.
Thanks @misothiocracysecretly. I hadn’t seen the info about the crew or another boat. Nor have we heard how she’s getting back. For some reason everyone listening to this 16 YEAR OLD bugs me no end.
Brilliant comparison. After all, the ecology is a cornerstone of the Leftist theology.
These birds do better repeat business, though.
The Trudeaupians prefer to use the term “social license”.
