Memoirs from the Meme War

When news broke that Donald Trump was discussing the purchase of Greenland, I did a quick Photoshop.

It got more traction than I expected, appearing on news sites in the U.S., New Zealand, Spain, Denmark, and Greenland itself. Both pro- and anti-Trump people shared it, becoming a political Rorschach test: would the image make you laugh (about 80% of the respondents) or inexplicably enrage you (20%). Lighten up, people.

Anyway, today, the President of the United States shared the image.

It’s a strange, strange world. Probably should have spent more than 10 minutes on the Photoshop.

If I recall correctly, part of Trump’s initial pitch to Kim Jong-un was how much opportunity Kim Jong-un could realize if North Korea were to develop its coastal lands and enter the tourism business -that the county (and he) would be much wealthier than they are now as a hermit country.

Here’s an article about the photo in one of Turkey’s biggest newspapers.

I think the next step is to show a Trump hotel 1/3 or 1/2 built and under construction with a couple of large construction cranes with some additional faux satellite imagery of cement trucks and long-bed trucks carrying steel beams arriving and leaving the site. Let’s have some fun.

    From FoxNews this evening:

Trump cancels visit with Denmark PM after she rebuffs ‘absurd’ idea of US buying Greenland

The U.S. made a somewhat similar effort to buy Greenland in 1947, albeit without the razzle-dazzle of social media.

The idea led some left-wing commentators to mock the White House, but most found humor in the moment — and, in something of a fourth-wall-breaking moment, Trump himself appeared to join in on Monday, tweeting a meme originally credited to Ricochet editor-in-chief Jon Gabriel.

The meme depicted a lavish Trump skyscraper looming over a mostly empty village in Greenland.

The president captioned the image, “I promise not to do this to Greenland!”

    Dear Danish People,

Jon was just kidding. It was a joke. No, really. There won’t be a large Trump building like what is depicted in the Photoshopped meme.

What size would you like? We’re flexible.

I think this tweet was great. It’s worth at least a chuckle whatever one’s politics. That said, Jon’s best tweet is still this one from 2014.

The Associated Press refers to this @exjon meme that Trump jokingly tweeted as a “doctored photo:

Does that mean we now have to call him Doctor Gabriel?

He’s not a real doctor, he only has a PsD (Photoshop Doctorate).

Yeah, well, even his PsD is fake. He doctored it.

Yes, but that’s just his way of coping with the PtsD from the meme war. It’s a vicious cycle.

Jon, are you Donald Trump’s long lost son?  From the Washington Post with a picture from the U.K. Guardian:

“The real estate mogul cum president decides he wants to buy the world’s largest island with U.S. funds. He and his son publicize images of what a massive building emblazoned with the Trump name would look like on the undeveloped island. “

Now I know why Ricochet is so understanding of Trump, our Editor in Chief is his secret son!
