Memoirs from the Meme War
When news broke that Donald Trump was discussing the purchase of Greenland, I did a quick Photoshop.

It got more traction than I expected, appearing on news sites in the U.S., New Zealand, Spain, Denmark, and Greenland itself. Both pro- and anti-Trump people shared it, becoming a political Rorschach test: would the image make you laugh (about 80% of the respondents) or inexplicably enrage you (20%). Lighten up, people.
Anyway, today, the President of the United States shared the image.
I promise not to do this to Greenland! pic.twitter.com/03DdyVU6HA

It’s a strange, strange world. Probably should have spent more than 10 minutes on the Photoshop.

To mangle Nathan Hale, “I’m thankful you have a buttload of Memes to give for our country.”
I agree with the president. Placing a building that tall close to an airport without hazard lighting would be irresponsible.
Someone is going to jail for reckless discharge of the cloning tool. The union has been alerted and your rep will meet you at the arraignment. Until then, I’d keep quiet if I were you…
No royalties? :)
As James Taranto used to say, We Get Results! Great job, Jon!
That’s all on me. The original was square. Luckily, POTUS didn’t share my widescreen version.
From now on we refer to you as Big Time Jon.
On the bright side, you’re likely to get a firm offer to be a photo editor at Al Jazeera.
Well, if the people who wanted to get Kevin Williamson fired from The Atlantic could come to Ricochet to crib an old podcast to take some of his snarky words out of context, I’m sure the president, or his Office of Tweets, can come here to borrow a photo of Greenland to assure the residents he’s not sticking a skyscraper casino in their village.
…plus, it’s silly to build up when there’s about 10,000 miles of waterfront property where the casino can front the boardwalk or the heated golf course.
World’s longest boardwalk? I’m in.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Elite Photoshop Division will be in contact soon with a job offer.
The twitter replies are really something, eh? STOP BEING FUNNY ! BE MAD! ALL THE TIME! ABOUT EVERYTHING!
And now featured on FoxNews:

Well done @exjon !
Fine job, Jon. But you really need more development, the whole waterfront. It’s gonna be yuuge! Trump would never build just one with that much space. That island could be the next Manhattan, holding millions, no billions, of people. It’s bigger than Alaska. If we wanted bigger, we would have to buy and develop Australia.
Seems like a missed opportunity.
A subtle Ricochet watermark might have really brought some traffic this way. Then again it may have crashed the site, maybe we’re better off.
That’s fantastic, Jon. I offer a weird congratulations on this. I liked the story you told on the pod on its origins last week (?).
Proof that no good deeds goes unpunished, etc.
When are you quitting Ricochet and turn into full time Meme Dude ™?
I’m assuming those are Russian

@ejhill … you should do some photoshop training at the next senior management meet up.
2008: Hugh potential oil reserve found off Greenland coast
2013: Greenland slaps a moratorium on the granting of fresh offshore oil and gas drilling licences
2018: Greenland offers oil and gas concessions off its west coast. Beijing is very interested.
2019: US – China trade wars continue.
The world wonders.
I can understand why Trump would decline to build that particular concept.
But . . .
What about a sprawling low-rise complex with several golf courses, like the Trump National Doral near Miami?
Unfortunately I see that several outlets that have picked up the photo (Fox, NYPost, Daily Wire) cut it off so that @exjon isn’t properly credited. :-(
Has Snopes misverified it yet? That would make it the GOAT.
It’s too hard to find the little golf balls in the snow.
No, you get the neon-colored balls. Then it’s easy.
Until the snow is deep!
You realize that you, in effect, have now been quoted by the President of the United States.
First, it was Peter Robinson with this “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall” line, now it’s you with a meme.
R>: Home for the shakers and movers of GOP politics!
Golf Magazine: If President Trump buys Greenland, the U.S. would acquire these golf courses

(I do love that piece of video)
President Trump: Your majesty, Queen Elizabeth, beautiful handbag by the way, and Mr. Prime Minister, Boris, we can be on first name basis, right? Brexit might bring some financial hardships, we can work with you, make a great big trade deal, both sides, make lots of money. But to hold you over, how much for Australia? Cash deal, right now.
