Police, Andy Ngo, and, Antifa Violence in Portland, OR
This past weekend, a quiet, unassuming journalist, Andy Ngo, was roughed-up and badly injured by an Antifa mob in Portland. That was bad enough in itself, but multiple media outlets note that the Portland Police seem to have stood by and let it happen. There have been a number of stories lately about the Portland Police’s passive attitude toward Antifa thugs who bring their brand of “demonstrations” to downtown Portland often. So, the well-known Leftists who run Portland (and Seattle, for that matter), who constantly deplore all sorts of violence, don’t seem to mind this kind of violence.
Well, this particular journalist is fighting back. He has lawyered-up and is planning to sue any and all organizations who contributed to his injuries. More power to him, and may he be successful.

This is sickening. I’m beginning not to recognize my country.
The Antifa terrorists have the media on their side so they don’t get bad press. The guy who wrote this research paper got banned from Twitter
https://quillette.com/2019/05/29/its-not-your-imagination-the-journalists-writing-about-antifa-are-often-their-cheerleaders/
We created a data set of 58,254 Antifa or Antifa-associated Twitter accounts based on the follows of 16 verified Antifa seed accounts. Using a software tool that analyzed the number and nature of connections associated with each individual account, we winnowed the 58,254 Antifa or Antifa-associated Twitter accounts down to 962 accounts. This represents a core group of Twitter users who are connected in overlapping ways to the most influential and widely followed Antifa figures. Of these 962 accounts, 22 were found to be verified—of which 15 were journalists who work regularly with national-level news outlets.
The Antifa are just an arm of the DNC, as is the press. We are closer to a shooting civil war than many realize.
The Portland government reminds me of the Democrat governments in southern states that tolerated the Klan and racial terrorism. They just traded black masks for white ones.
We on the Right need to be aggressive about holding everyone accountable who is involved with these violent activities, not only Antifa but the government leaders, the media, and law enforcement. I despise lawsuits, but it’s one powerful way to have accountability. Ngo’s attorney is becoming famous as a person who represents these people who are abused, and fighting against those who defy the law. Her name is Harmeet Dhillon and she’s fearless.
Scott Adams (Dilbert Creator) has decided that Antifa is just sport and the police are wise to just step back and let the neonazis and Antifa duke it out. He says their weapons are non-lethal and any journalist showing up should know what to expect and stay away.
As interesting as Adams is, he is consistently nihilistic and amoral in his view of the world.
Since I do not pay any attention to the clown show, have all the clowns been badgered incessantly until each has given a sufficiently harsh condemnation of this domestic terrorist group?
Oh yea, nevermind.
The Police non-response to Antifa violence has very serious implications and could easily lead to a societal chaos where there is no trust in law enforcement and there is a return to self appointed militias to keep the peace. Unfortunately this Police non-response to Antifa mayhem is not new and is now only a more stark and obvious reminder of previous apparently Police intentional stand downs in Portland, Berkeley, Charlottesville and other areas.
Attorney General Barr needs to be all over this. For several years now, Antifa has roamed all over the country only to show up at political rallies to create trouble and sow violence. This is a nationwide conspiracy to repress political speech and cause politically motivated mayhem. The time has come to prosecute all the way to the top of the DNC and the George Soros organizations that organize and fund these assault operations. Failure to do so could quickly lead to the unraveling of our civil society and create a situation where few feel safe.
@rushbabe49, could you do me a favor and remove my name from the title of the post, thanks.
Portland liberals and The Oregonian pretend that Antifa and the small right wing group that opposes them are equivalent.
They’re not. Antifa is a left wing mob who come out looking for trouble. They are fomenters of violence. The right-wing group, the Proud Boys, are fewer in number and are responders to the violence of Antifa.
The Antifa thugs were causing chaos in the streets long before any right wing group came out to oppose them.
I strongly suspect if the Mayor and his minions would have reigned in the Antifa from the begininning, there would be no Proud Boys.
I know orders are orders, but what kind of human being can stand fast and watch an innocent person be assaulted? What if the reporter had been female and was sexually abused during the assault? A particularly vicious assault is attempted murder in my book.
I hope Portland gets the “Oberlin” treatment and ends up paying big $$$ to the reporter . . .
This is merely a preview of the Leftist governing vision in which progressive politicians require law enforcement to stand aside in order to let the Left’s “military wing” take action against opponents.
It was received remarkably little attention but there is an ongoing lawsuit in Federal Court regarding a 2016 incident outside of a Trump rally in San Jose, CA where police stood aside while Leftists beat and badly injured Trump supporters – it is alleged the elected officials instructed the police and firemen present not to intervene. The injured have filed a lawsuit against the city and the 9th Circuit(!) has allowed it to proceed.
[The Portland police are] getting so good at “not intervening” it might be easier for the city simply to lay them off and contract out all “law enforcement” to Antifa. — Mark Steyn.
Portland would save a lot of money that way, and it would give them an insurmountable lead in the Woke Olympics.
Well, you’re looking at the end of about two or more decades of the Police being browbeat, sued, and punished for the smallest suspected problem. The Portland City Council and the previous Mayors — who also serves as Police Commissioner — have been quick to throw officers under the bus at any accusation of impropriety, deserved or no. My totally existing detective friend began working Portland, but jumped at a chance to work in nearby Vancouver, Washington as the city north of Portland actually appreciates their law enforcement officers. He’s one of the most decent men I know, and he helps a lot of people in his current position.
The end result is what’s now referred to as The Fergusson Effect. Police departments are having trouble recruiting and maintaining the kind of people they want on the force, and those presently serving are reluctant to stick their necks out for city that’s likely to turn on them when it’s convenient. You’re getting less police officers now, and few if any are willing to go against the Mayor’s orders if it means serious personal consequences.
There’s the country and then there is Portland. Andy Ngo would have police protection if he needed it in the vast majority of the country. Furthermore, the vast majority of this country doesn’t beat up journalists.
Portland is having trouble recruiting police officers. They recently reduced education requirement to a high school diploma or GED. At one time they required a four year degree.
Exactly.
Note, too, that both Washington County and Clackamas County Sheriffs have declared they won’t come to assist Portland. They had in the past, but it’s proven too expensive (thanks to lawsuits) and problematic. So Portland lacks reliable and experienced offers, it lacks promising recruits, and hasn’t any help coming from outside.
Again, this has been after a couple decades of leftist policy in action.
Interesting. Maybe the neighboring county should simply invade, overthrow the existing government of Portland and intall their own puppet city council. :)
If you want a somewhat different take on the issue at hand, read my post, “Portland Through the Eyes of a Conservative.”
I added emphasis to a couple of your comments.
I guess I can see if real, caring human beings aren’t able to jump in and do their duty, then they are replaced by recruits who are quite capable of watching someone get beaten up and think, “Better them than me in the courts.”
So sad, but all the more reason to carry a weapon yourself . . .
I’m waiting for the Feds to step in after a declaration of martial law. I’d love to see Trump “pull a Lincoln” and put local governments who refuse to protect their citizens behind bars pending the restoration of peace.
Then upon release, the Feds supervise new local elections, where the previous politicians are permanently banned from participating.
The scary part, dear folks, is when gangs sympathetic with our side begin to fight fire with fire. Don’t think it’s not going to happen.
So Portland is like Afghanistan? It’s become so barbaric and lawless that more civilized neighbors have to go through the tiresome process of installing a new regime?
I expect a slew of older grumpy guys shooting homeless people after being assaulted.
Instead of getting the Feds involved can’t the governor declare a state of emergency. Probably Trump could do a better job but the Fed is still a little too heavy handed for me taste.
@ All Ricochetti:
Please let me know if my multiple posts at once style of responding is harmonious with the house style of Ricochet. I don’t want to dominate anything but I just like the responses and I feel it appropriate to respond to them individually.
I’d like to hear from our Oregonian contingent here but my impression is the current governor likes the situation in Portland just as it is.
She’s just as woke as the mayor.
Portland is definitely having difficulties recruiting, as are other cities under DOJ consent decrees. It does not help matters when your city government is filled with psychotics with anger management issues. Policing is difficult enough when you have to deal with average citizen’s that have the same issues. The Multnomah County Commissioner’s are just as bats*** crazy.
The city governments of Seattle and Portland are run by 1960s radicals who think of police as pigs. Thus, this is what you can expect. Seattle is still operating under an Obama-era consent agreement (where they admit their cops are racist and violence-prone), which the city agreed with in the main. Whatever police do, they are second-guessed by the mob, and assumed to be in the wrong. I wouldn’t want to be a police officer under those kinds of conditions.
**A thank-you to the Ricochet editors who helped me with my original post.
The DOJ should be directing the FBI to drill down on this network, and should be seeking and executing search warrants on Twitter headquarters for Antifa co-conspirators.
