Thanks, IRS
Nice news from the IRS yesterday. About two months ago we received a letter about our 2017 taxes. Dear Mr. and Mrs E, we think you owe us about $7,000.
Turns out they were right that I missed reporting the cost basis for a mutual fund that we sold. But I wrote them back explaining that the mistake actually caused us to overstate our gain, so we didn’t think any additional tax would be owed. I was hoping they would just let it slide.
Yesterday we received a notice that they will be sending us a $96 refund. Thanks!
Lucky we’re not a conservative 501 (c) (3).

One year the IRS caught an error that I made. In my favor. My refund ended up larger than planned, and I had to appreciate their honesty and accuracy. A previous year, they asked me about “undeclared income” that turned out to be “return of capital” that I had previously invested. Once I sent them the proof, they were happy. So was I, and it goes to show you that keeping meticulous records pays off.
one year, the irs cashed my check for a little less than I wrote it for. i assumed they corrected a mistake and did the needful.
8 months later they sent me a bill for the difference plus interest.
One year they lost my return and a large check for what I owed. They tried to penalize me but I had sent it return recipient requested. After one full year they claimed I still owed one dollar. I sent it and never looked back.
So, you are admitting that you filed a fraudulent return? And you’re a conservative? Does Mueller know about this?
NO COLLUSION! NO OBSTRUCTION!
I’ve been an independent contractor most of my career. The wife and I have always found the IRS to be the most reasonable of the tax agencies we need to interact with.
Our city in Ohio, however, is a real piece of work. They paid 55¢ to send a letter to Son #2 this spring to tell him he owed 87¢. So, now you figure they’re only on the plus side for 32¢. Nope, they included a self-addressed prepaid envelope for his convenience.
What good luck! Normally, folks end up getting nailed.
A good sign was the IRS admitted its mistake (not directly) by sending the refund . . .
On two occasions in different years the IRS sent me a refund check for $1.00. The first time I sent a copy of that check and a letter to my Congressman (D) suggesting that this was a stupid waste, as the cost to generate and mail the refund check was more than the amount of the refund. I think I got a reply something like, “Thanks, now go away.” The second time I sent the letter to President Trump. Again, just the standard response.
The IRS didn’t make an error – I did. But it was an error in the IRS’s favor. I didn’t want to go to the trouble of re-filing, so I was just going to let it ride.
Was that in the mid 1980’s, out in California? Around that time, a ship docked near San Francisco was being used to store IRS paperwork. And the ship caught fire and burned to the water line.
People who were owed refunds were put in a bad situation. Some folks had to deal with a huge delay in getting the refund. Others were never given one.
Of course people who owed money were basically given a “Get out of payment free” card.
OK, here’s my story:
I got a letter once from the IRS stating that I owed some money. I called them on the phone and spoke to a women who was about to argue when I told her I was looking at my bank account online and the check I wrote to the Gubmint for that amount had been cashed and posted against my account. She stuttered and put me on hold a few minutes. When she came back, she apologized and told me to ignore their demand. A week later I got a letter from the IRS apologizing for their error. I had it framed.
