Welcome Baby Girl Mandel!

Excuse my absence this week (and for the next few), we’ve been a bit busy since the weekend.

Our daughter was born on Saturday afternoon right here in our bedroom. She joins an older sister and two older brothers (5, 4 and 2) who are over the moon to welcome her into their crew. It was a good birth as births go, and recovery is going really well (as thankfully it always has in the past). My husband Seth took the week off of work to ease the transition and so far it’s going really well, but we’ll see how life is going after he goes back. We took our first trip out of the house yesterday as a family of six, out with Seth’s parents (visiting from New Jersey) to the neighborhood pool and out to dinner.

Thank you the Ricochet family (Scott, Jon, and Max) for picking up whatever slack I leave while we’re getting used to another little person in our home. I’ll be floating around for the next few weeks!

    YAAAAAAY!

Sunday, my wife and were driving back to South Carolina from Tennessee.  Ironically, we had just finished listening to the lastest LadyBrains podcast, when she looked at Twitter and said, “Oh, Bethany had her baby.”

So congratulations!  Your look of adoration at your new daughter is priceless . . .

Naturally, Bethany’s taking hardly any time off at all. She sent me a message at 4:30 AM this morning about this week’s LadyBrains episode. :-D

Wonderful news and your bedroom is a much better place to do the whole birthing thing than the Altima!!!

Congratulations! So pleased that you have another wonderful child. Great parents should have lots of children…We did four home births, on purpose, 35-40 years ago, and it was a terrific choice for us. Rest…relax…recover.

    Well done!

A systems engineer friend who is the father of 13 (my girlfriend-for-life and I  run with a pretty fertile crowd) once told me that the first five are the hardest–after that it begins to approach a self-sustaining system.  As the father of eight, I tend to agree with that assessment (note: our wives both dispute that but I don’t think they have approached the subject with the same analytical rigor as we have.)

Big families are especially fun when holidays and big events roll around.  Grandkids with lots of aunts and uncles are especially blessed.  Growing up, my kids’ friends liked to be part of the big family atmosphere.  (It helped that my wife is perhaps the most gifted baker never to go pro.)  Now they are all grown up and I am sometimes just amazed that we made those people when I listen to them talk like adults.

I still find it strangely soothing when I hear other people’s children acting out.  At first it was just relief that it was not my kids and some comfort that we were not alone in enduring the occasional adverse public display.  Now it is more like a kind of satisfaction or even quiet joy watching young parents struggling in the moment not yet fully aware of how wondrous the whole experience is and that they will someday actually miss being needed by a snot-nosed tantrum thrower.

    God bless your adventure!

I love the pictures. Thank you so much for letting us see those.

I am a complete sucker for little babies…and the images of siblings checking out the newcomer brought back so many funny, chaotic scenes…

    Joy all ’round!

There is a newborn girl abandoned in GA on June 6th, tied in a plastic bag. Maybe Bethany could raise them as twins?
