Contributor Post Created with Sketch. AOC: The Holocaust Is Not a Prop for Your Trump Hate

The argument holds that personal attacks against New York Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are a terrible idea. On policy and commentary, however, she’s fair game. Her continued love of the Green New Deal, her irrational view of the minimum wage and belief in the mythology of the living wage, her horrific associations with world-renowned anti-semites like UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn – and then bragging about it! – and her defense of antisemitic up-and-comer Rep. Ilhan Omar: all fair game. All worthy of comment and, yes, derision.

Just six months ago, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez was Teflon to criticism. Six months later, the slick coating has worn thin. Everything sticks now. And it’s all her fault.

Her recent declaration that the United States is holding immigrants at the border in “concentration camps” should stick, on her and in the memory of American voters and donors. In a video to her fans, she lied about the border, abdicated her responsibility as a member of Congress and showed America that her political cravenness outweighs her decency.

From her Facebook Live video:

The United States is running concentration camps on the Southern border, and that’s exactly what they are: concentration camps.

If that doesn’t bother you…I want to talk to the people that are concerned enough with humanity to say that “never again” means something.…

I don’t use those words lightly. I don’t use those words to just throw bombs. I use that word because that is what an administration that creates concentration camps is. A presidency that creates concentration camps is fascist and it’s very difficult to say that.

The fact that concentration camps are now an institutionalized practice in the home of the free is extraordinarily disturbing.

She went on to claim that immigrant children were moved to the “internment camps” where the Japanese were held during WWII, which she referred to as the “earlier 20th century,” because she clearly didn’t know the dates of WWII.

Let’s start with the end: it’s the land of the free and the home of the brave. I mean, it’s right there in the National Anthem!

Yes, children and others were recently sent to Fort Sill. It was used during WWII and, yes, it was an internment camp. And it’s the same Fort Sill that was utilized by the Obama Administration to hold immigrants.

Did Rep. Ocasio-Cortez purposefully omit the information about the Obama Administration, or, as the dates of WWII, did she just not know?

Fort Sill is utilized because the border situation has become impossible, and we need to put the people somewhere. America can fix this, but elected officials like Ocasio-Cortez refuse to their job. Rather than live up to their responsibilities and pass legislation that changes asylum laws, eliminates the separation of families and recognizes America’s border and sovereignty, they go to Facebook Live and make videos.

But the thrust of her comments regards the Holocaust. The Shoah. The systematic murder of Jews and elimination of European Jewry (if not worldwide Jewry.) When you say, “Never Again,” what else could it possibly be?

To Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and her acolytes, take note: The Holocaust Is Not A Prop.

Comparing the situation at the Southern border to concentration camps isn’t a misspeak or a bad analogy; it’s a purposeful lie that denigrates and diminishes the horror of the Holocaust, and turns it into a prop for your political attacks.

It’s the prop that elected officials and celebrities have used to go after the President. Facts be damned! Truth be damned! Memory be damned! Horror be damned! Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and others in the Democratic party have made it clear that, when it comes to destroying President Trump, the ends justify the means.

The ends don’t justify the means. They never have. Yet the party will excuse this comparison as acceptable…if not outright cheering it. Trump Derangement Syndrome is very real and makes potentially decent people fully obscene.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez doubled down on her claims, and tried to clap back against Republican Rep. Liz Cheney by making the technical distinction between a “concentration camp” and a “death camp.” Honestly, that’s just pathetic. If she wasn’t trying to make a comparison to Nazi Germany she would not have added, “Never Again” to her comments.

And, as if rational people need this explained to them: The Jews got forced into concentration camps. On the Southern border, the people showed up voluntarily. No one is forcing those people to do any labor. No one is denying them medical care. No one is engaging in scientific experiments on them.

It’s a pathetic, disgusting, obscene comparison. And Rep. Ocasio-Cortez didn’t just double down on it. She tripled-down. And so did Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), who cheered her ugliness even while the Israel Holocaust Museum explains her mistake.

She wants the connection, and it’s obvious. The ends justify the means for her and her party, so she is ok with using the systematic murder of Jews to her political advantage. Jews, and all rational people, have to loudly tell Rep. Ocasio-Cortez that her comments and comparisons are wrong, and wrong-headed. They must speak loudly with their words and their votes in 2020.

So loudly that the entirety of the Democratic Party and all the world can hear: The Holocaust Is Not A Prop.

That would be great, but even if she lost her seat to a Tea Partying Trump supporter, there would still be an entire political party that uses the Holocaust, slavery, and Jim Crow laws (which they wrote and enforced) as props, on a regular basis.

There is the problem. Congress is useless on this issue. They refuse to act on this terrible problem because it is an issue where they can make hay. Despicable.

Indeed. I put a “like” on this comment because I agree with it. But I certainly don’t like it! Not at all. It is a very sad commentary on the lack of historical knowledge in our populace that they both believe and get away with perpetuating the insidious comparison. It’s also incredibly sad that many Jews, or at least people who identify as such, will agree with the comparison or give cover to those who make it because they consider other left-wing policies more important. Too many Jews, and all too many Democrats, agree with Obama that Israel exists as a country as some kind of compensation for the Holocaust rather than as the historic Jewish homeland.

    Thanks for this post.

I hope AOC accepts the invitation to go to Poland. She needs some education.
