Congrats to Gary Woodland

This is Gary Woodland, this year’s US Open champion together with Special Olympian, Amy Bockerstette from earlier this year. Congrats on your win, Gary. You’re a champion in more than just golf!

Here’s Amy’s tweet to Gary before he tee’d off for his final round at Pebble Beach today:

I remember that video from a few months ago. Great stuff, and a great tournament. It is rare for a 35 year-old to win their first major and it is getting pretty rare for anyone to win a major when competing against Koepka (who still manage 2nd place). The chip on 17 really sealed it and the long putt for birdie on 18 was just an exclamation point on the whole thing.

Fox Sports did an excellent job broadcasting this event. They produced a number of mini programs discussing historical happenings as they related to this tournament and also, specials on individual players. They did one on Gary Woodland (aside from the Amy Bockerstette video) that related to the final day being Fathers Day. Gary has a 2 year old son…the surviving twin from serious birth problems. The deceased twin was his daughter. You might have noticed that Gary’s wife was not there to celebrate at the 18th green. She is now pregnant with twin girls. I found the story to be a real tear jerker. Gary Woodland was unflappable in this final round. The pressure and the competition was intense, as always. But Woodland was almost stoic as he shrugged off Brooks Koepka and Justin Rose who both at times made serious runs at Gary’s lead. Congrats to a fine young man on his first major win. Way to go Gary Woodland!
