I’m thinking the following people need to see this too:
@thereticulator
@garymcvey
They remind me of our 1981 Dodge Omni. Parts fell off with alarming regularity.
Thanks Barkha. I enjoyed the video.
I think someone needs to crowd-fund Volga M21s for AOC and her girl band, plus one for the audience poll winner of each Democrat presidential primary debate.
They should instead be give a fleet of Trabis. Don’t think the video mentioned that they’re 2-cycle engines – they are, making them extra fun and smokey.
You can still buy a brand new Russian copy of a 20’s BMW motorcycle – the Ural. They are actually somewhat cool with a sidecar. German engineering (sort of) without Kalashnikov reliability .
In my military days pilots referred to the various Soviet aircraft that were copies of western aircraft as “skis”; eg: 727-ski, C-5ski, etc. IIRC there were satellite pics of a space shuttle copy sitting on a runway somewhere.
Ah, the Buran shuttle! That’s a topic John Walker once covered here I recall.
Yes, I’ve seen one in Army green at a coffee shop several times.
Urals are popular in Vietnam and are available as rental bikes.
This Lada Niva was on it’s way to the ice front near Sonderstrom AFB, Greenland August, 1981. Not a mechanical breakdown, but a deep pothole in the trail. Sorry for the inverted image.
I happened upon an eBay listing for a 1976 Volga taxi . Looking for the dealership, Alpha Cars , it appears they have several vintage Soviet cars and military trucks for sale (Lada, Volga, ZAZ, UAZ, etc.) AND they sell new Ural motorcycles with sidecars.
What fun!
