Chart showing support for each leader by country.
It’s not quite the same as the map of the world from 1984, but the resemblance is still somewhat uncanny.
I’m not optimistic that Maduro’s regime falls. But the opposition probably had to try now, before Putin gets his forces any more entrenched than he already has. Maduro still probably has the upper hand right now.
If the left were in power, the State Department would have called for Guaido’s people to sit down and shut up (they’d have called it “calm”) and for “stability”, meaning leave the poor little leftist thug alone. They’d have found the totalitarian regime in place more to their liking than any alternative, as long as it mouthed their weakling platitudes.
The first impulse of the left is always to betray their
fellowsbetters. See, for instance, their approach to the insane mullahs in Iran. Mike Pompeo, on the other hand, has made our support for Guaido explicit and loud.Juan Guaido might not be the next coming of Thomas Jefferson. Heck, this is Venezuela – Bolivarismo is the defining political myth of central and much of South America. You work with what you have.
However this works out, it’s a great day for the society of the liberty-minded in Venezuela and the Americas as a whole.
Oh yeah – Hillary Clinton will never be President of the United States.
So how committed are we to really backing the legitimate government and the people of Venezuela? I recall in Syria we had words of support and demands for Assad to step down. But the he started bombing his people and getting foreign mercenaries to sure up his support. And we sat arround twiddling our thumbs until ISIS exploded onto the scene.
Myself I say we back Gauido to the hilt, and use our navy and air force to prevent any Cuban or Russian reinforcements from arriving. If need be put up no fly zones and shoot down any aircraft Maduro would use to kill his people. If Gauido calls for assistance from the international community I hope we are ready to give it.

Baghdad Bob?
Who can say at this point? With all foreign media cut off it’s difficult to assess how successfully they’ve suppressed the opposition. What does it mean that one of the opposition leaders is seeking shelter in the Chilean Embassy? Cut off from friendly forces? Lack of confidence?
Chaos.
That was my first thought when I saw that. Could also depend on what condition he was really in after being released.
What’s with Turkey? Is is all just cheap ant-Americanism?
There is an explanation why Norway has a weird position on Venezuela.
A decade, I had a co-worker who was from Venezuela. He said that people got along until Chavez stirred up class hatred. Fortunately, that could never in the U.S. with a person whose slogan was hope won.

Pray for the people of Venezuela as they choose, through violence, whether it should be the same, or a different, socialist slavemaster to drive them down the path to ruin.
