He Is Not Here

1 Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him. Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?” But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away—for it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed.

But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you.”

So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

A blessed Easter to my brothers and sisters.

While there are so many great and classic hymns for this day, but in this spirit of this post, the following comes to mind – not a hymn, but moves me powerfully nonetheless:

    “He’s alive!
    He’s alive!
    He’s alive, and I’m forgiven
    Heaven’s gates are open wide!
    He’s alive!”

I can’t wait to see angels and Christ’s own face. It occurred to me this morning that I tend to think of the communion of saints like ghosts, rather than expecting to meet them as flesh and blood.

At sunrise Mass this morning, a heron flew directly over the congregation as Christ was made present in body and blood. I prefer herons to doves.

While my church did not use this great hymn this year, it always comes to mind at Easter:

Glorious! Sublime in its beauty, as is the event it represents.

I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day
Upon the earth. And though worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God. (Job 19: 25-26)
For now is Christ risen from the dead, the first fruits of them that sleep. (I Corinthians 15: 20)

He has become so synonymous in history with redemption that Merriam-Webster lists Jesus as part of the definition of redeemer.  On this blessed Easter day, I am so very grateful for the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

    redeemer

    nounre·deem·er | \ ri-ˈdē-mər  \

    Definition of redeemer

a person who redeems especially, capitalized JESUS

That was extraordinary by any measure but especially so in what appears to be a small church.

    Just beautiful!

Beautiful. Added to my annual Easter playlist.

She has the voice and heart to sing this. So few do!

    Thank you.

(It always amazes me how confident the composers were that they would be able to find the one or two sopranos on the planet who could sing those notes! :-)   )

We did!  As our processional, even.  And Handel’s “Messiah’s” “Hallelujah!” And I sing in the choir.  He is Risen Indeed!  Hallelujah!

That is one thing about Easter: those songs! It’s the only day of the year we sing them:”Christ the Lord, Is Risen Today” and “He is Risen”.  At Christmas, we sing Christmas songs as soon as Thanksgiving has passed, so we get an entire month. But, Easter is only one day. I love those songs; I love playing them and I love singing them.

    Happy Easter all!
