Sanctuary Sweepstakes

First there was a “leak” that Orange Man Bad was thinking about punishing Sanctuary Cities by “dumping” illegal aliens in them, but the courageous Deep State talked him out of it. Then there was “OM!, Trump publicly saying he was still thinking about it!” And then there was Pelosi and others saying how mean and evil Trump was to either think about it or do it: “dumping” illegal aliens in Sanctuary Cities. Then there was Tucker Carlson making specific suggestions as to which communities to target with the opportunity to embrace Sanctuary politicians’ inner virtue. Now the AP has launched the latest counteroffensive by publishing Trump sanctuary city idea could help migrants stay in the US. You see, Trump’s strategy could actually backfire! Certainly, Libby Schaaf, Oakland CA mayor, is ready to embrace more illegals.

Color me confused. How many Trump supporters actually believe that there will be mass deportations? So, if there aren’t, how is this going to undermine Trump’s electoral chances? More likely, should illegals be placed (not “dumped”) in those communities that have vocally advocated for them, so the residents get first-hand experience on what happens when all of the benefits that advocates have touted are received, or not. This is not a losing bet for Trump. It smacks of baseball executive Sandy Alderson’s response to the threat of an umpire’s strike: “This is either a threat to be ignored or an offer to be accepted.”

I thought Trump’s suggestion was great. He could have planned it as a fait accompli, with the planes already en route to San Fran then played it deadpan: “But Nancy, of course I thought they’d be happier in your welcoming, open-minded, open-hearted sanctuary communities …and I know how much you and your constituents love the vibrant diversity they bring with them…!”

Who could complain about being sent to Berkeley? Or (wow!) Hawaii? Nice weather, no bigots. They’d surely be better off than the poor Somalis who got sent to shiver in Minnesota and Maine?

Except housing is affordable in Minnesota whereas housing prices are off the charts in California. Even the Gavin Newsome regime announced recently that we have not provided anything above 40% of all needed housing since the year 2008.

I recall the days when the mayor of Lewiston was asking his new, Somali residents to please hold off on inviting all their relatives to join them, since the city (not a rich one by any means) was struggling to provide housing, bilingual education and other services for those already in situ. My liberal relations went nuts (along with various sectors of the MSM) accusing him of racism and xenophobia…

Surely woke Californians won’t balk at paying any price, bearing any burden to host these deserving, desperate escapees from sh**hole perfectly-fine-but-impoverished-by-colonialism countries? Particularly given that the alternative would be exposing the vulnerable to further trauma from the denizens of flyover states riddled with -ism?

That weird feeling you get when Cher makes more sense than the folks at National Review…

Well, Sonny was in the House as a Republican.  Looks like at least a little bit of him rubbed off on her.

I agree with the democrats on this issue. Its unconstitutional to force immigrants to live in a sanctuary city…. Its a cruel and unusual punishment.

Ha! Ha! It’s cruel and unusual punishment just making Democrats live with each other.

That is a very interesting anecdote to realate. Thanks Granny Dude.

And I am not convinced that the caravan folks deliberately sidestepped TX, NM or AZ to come to California as there  would be no racism. I think it has far more to do  with how generous California is, regarding benefits. Even in the 1980’s, a single mom of two got over $ 840 for two kids. Plus food stamps and housing vouchers.

The Central Americans walked hundreds of miles further to get to The Golden State. They will endure racism, from many liberals who will employ them at cut throat rates in the backs of restaurants, on construction crews and other jobs where under the table wages prevail. And you should read the lease terms of some of the rental agreements these immigrants will sign off on. Things like $ 125 a day late fees, which are on going til the day the rent is paid in full. The fees often kick in by the 4th.

I don’t know where you are getting your information, but I was an eligibility work for AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children) during the 1960s, and 80s until 1996 in L.A. and Sacramento, and we did not pay out that kind of money for a mom with 2 kids. If they applied for homeless assistant, we gave them 3 weeks in a cheap motel until they found housing, and it had to be within a certain range or public housing, they had to pay the first month’s rent and then we paid the the last month rent or the deposit. Food stamps depended upon their income and utilities.  I guarantee you that AFDC moms are not living “high off the hog” on welfare.

Perhaps higher up the hog than those in other states though?
