The Deed Is Done!

The time went by so quickly! Creative Judaism Partnering with G-d: Insecurity and Love is published!

About one month ago, I wrote a post about my delight in partnering with @iwe on a book on the Torah. We just finished it, and it has been one of the most educational and joyous writing experiences of my life. To not only be in a position of trust (in both directions) but also produce a book that speaks to our love of Torah and Judaism was truly a gift.

Many of you know that I came into the project as a nascent Jew. I’ve been a Jew all my life, but I discovered pretty early in my re-engagement process with Judaism how little I knew (thanks to my friends on Ricochet who graciously and kindly have corrected me). I still have a great deal to learn about my faith, but thanks to @iwe, I have been blessed to participate in this project.

It wasn’t easy. First, I had the task of trying to blend his many essays as well as small parts of his last book into a meaningful collection of ideas. It was a truly organic process, and we both worked hard to find ways of being true to Torah, as well as creative in the interpretations. My job was primarily to help the book flow and to be written in a style that would reach beginners like myself, but also speak to all people who are open to a book that would not only educate, but engage and excite people about its ideas.

Then I had to learn the Amazon system for producing the book. Amazon does an excellent job of providing templates, guidance, and descriptions for putting a book together. But I’m still trying to disguise my bald spots that I created in total exasperation! Seriously, those moments were few and were short-term, but I found the entire process challenging, invigorating and a test in persistence. Through the entire effort, @iwe was enormously patient and encouraging; without his warmth and sense of humor, I don’t know if, at times, I would have persisted.

So now I can say that we have created a book that tells Jews how they can embrace Judaism and serve Hashem; what it teaches them about life and creativity; how they can possibly see Judaism in a whole new engaging light, or at least one that might be different from their past experience or understanding of Judaism. Please join us in celebrating this partnership and our work!

For those of you who would like to know @iwe’s experience of creating this heartfelt work, stay tuned.

I just ordered a copy (hard).  Amazon says to expect delivery on Tuesday.  Looks like some good Pesach reading.  Again, very best wishes and congratulations.

    PS:  Love the cover.

That beautiful cover is a quilt made by Mrs. @iWe. Thanks so much, @Caryn!

Why is God spelled out on the cover, and not spelled “G-d?”

Well, now, we discussed that issue. And @iwe discussed with a highly respected rabbi which would be best, considering our content, audience, etc., and he suggested we spell out G-d. We originally we used the hyphen, but it’s not irreligious to spell it out in English. It’s a personal choice to abbreviate it in English. In Hebrew, G-d’s name is not spelled out. I hope that makes sense!

Thanks, @caroljoy. We’re focused on getting out the word for now, although we’ve already written a good portion of the next book!

It was much discussed, I can tell you. My Rabbi made the call. Go figure.

Already on my Kindle – and read halfway!  You two have offered something that speaks to believers of many descriptions, with warmth, sensitivity, and invitation.  This last two weeks of Lent will be spent with two great friends: thanks so much!
