Recommended by Ricochet Members Created with Sketch. QOTD March 27, 2019: Unite to Serve

During our challenges, God puts people in our paths so we are not alone. He truly watches over us and protects us. He knows our needs. There are people everywhere who reach out and help us.

The Hunts are going through some hard things right now. Now that we are a few months into Mark’s job loss, we can look back and see God’s hand in everything: We have a dynamic support system, we have made a lot of new friends and acquaintances, our marriage has actually become stronger, our kids are thriving, we have learned to adjust and adapt.

We tried to go at everything alone in the beginning. By uniting to serve one another, we have accomplished more than we thought possible. Some of the best support has come from Ricochet, and we thank you for it. We are grateful for the prayers, wisdom, and the good advice.

Our loving Heavenly Father sends loved ones and friends to help us cope with our challenges. He helps us to overcome our pride and ask for help when we need it. Sometimes that help can be a blessing and a curse! We don’t know why we’re going through a particular challenge, but it makes it easier to deal with it with friends and family by our side.

    My favorite Bible verse:

John 13:34-35, New Revised Standard Version

34 I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

God wants us to love each other and help each other. I find that the most important message he brought or sent. :-)

I’m glad things are looking up for you. :-)

When I read the last sentence above, I thought about the so-called Chinese Curse: “May you live in interesting times.” After researching the origin of the curse, the actual words were stated by Sir Austen Chamberlain in 1936. A Sci-Fi writer in 1950.s put it this way:

For centuries the Chinese used an ancient curse: ‘May you live in interesting times!’ It isn’t a curse any more. It’s a blessing. We’re scientific and civilized. We’ve got so many rights and liberties and freedoms that one can yearn for chains for the sheer pleasure of busting them and shaking them off. Reckon life would be more livable if there were any chains left to bust.

Shauna Hunt: Our marriage has actually become stronger.

Next to your following of the Heavenly Father, your marriage would be my recommendation for emphasis.

Now 25 years after my period of unemployment and my (financially unsuccessful) attempt at self-employment, I can see how what Mrs. Tabby and I did together during that period provided quite a foundation for our children’s growth in economic reality. It turns out that it was very valuable for our children to hear, “no, we can’t afford [whatever it is they wanted].”

Also, as I met with others who were unexpectedly unemployed, I was surprised by how little support infrastructure many of them had. Our church family was very valuable. We didn’t need them to provide monetary or physical resources, but having them as people who valued us as people gave us much that other men did not have if they had put their entire self-worth value into their employment.

Even though the situation is taking a toll on all of us, they’re beginning to see things more clearly. I consider it a bittersweet gift. Because of my health issues, my kids have become wiser and more compassionate. Our daughter has a job and has been loaning us money. It’s awkward because she’s sixteen.

Our church family is amazing. I mean that truly. My dad lives next door and is in the same ward (congregation) we are. He is aware of what’s going on and helping out. Mostly, giving out good advice. Our situation is very complicated in some ways. Mr. Hunt is now in a position to get a temporary job. He will have to get a new career.

    Thank you for your insight!
