There is a spark of the divine in each of us; I guess the great task is to recognize it.

“Serving each other brings out the best in all of us!”

So true!  And, it turns us out from an imbalance of introspection.  I have the opportunity to serve as a mentor with a congregation of 18 to 30 single adults, and with almost every conversation the topic of service comes up.  Not only are we God’s hands in helping good things come to pass, but we unlock a greater understanding of the gifts and talents that He blesses us with.  We also come to see the world as He sees it – this massive family; brothers and sisters we are all.  Also, as I get older, I realize that while I do all I can to become self-sufficient – life is a team sport.  There is power in that design of leveraging inter-relationships.

So much good comes from striving to do good for others.  The benefactor becomes the beneficiary.

It reminds me of two things. One is, if not said by HP Lovecraft then inspired by him, that the scariest thing about his monsters was that they were not motivated by malice but by indifference.

A more light-hearted one is this old joke:

A man was trapped on his roof during a flood.

A boat came by, and the crew offered him a ride. He turned them down saying, “God will save me.”

Another boat came by offering the same thing. Again he turned them down, saying, “God will save me.”

Next a helicopter came by, again offering to rescue him. He turned them down too, again saying, “God will save me.”

Finally the old man drowned as the waters swept over him.

When the old man stood before the Lord he asked, “Lord, I put my faith in you. Why didn’t you save me from the flood?”

The Lord responded, “I sent two boats and a helicopter. What more did you want?”
