Pelosi: “I’m Not for Impeachment”

In a wide-ranging interview with the Washington Post, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made some big news. “I’m not for impeachment,” she said and went on to explain her reasoning.

This is news. I’m going to give you some news right now because I haven’t said this to any press person before. But since you asked, and I’ve been thinking about this: Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country. And he’s just not worth it.

This statement will surely send ripples through Washington, both among the Russia-obsessed press and the resistance-fueled Democrats. How will the Speaker respond to these certain attacks from her left?

Pelosi already caved to the progressive upstarts over Rep. Omar’s anti-semitism. If she reverses herself on impeachment as well, it will be clear that she isn’t the Democrat in charge anymore.

I wouldn’t be so sure, Jon. She may be taking her first tentative steps to say she is in charge to all the crazies. She’s in effect starting with Jerry Nadler, but let’s see if we see more assertiveness toward Omar. I think she’s probably angry at all of them for making her life difficult.

Nancy’s probably gotten some more advance info on the Mueller report producing zip on the collusion story, along with polling that shows swing voters don’t want to spend the next year-and-a-half with Democrats trying to impeach Trump on minor violations. But having pretty much run the 2018 election based on the idea it was going to be payback time in 2019, Peolsi’s going to find it difficult to get the immediate gratification angry left base of the party to cool their jets in order to help the party’s chances in 2020

Shades of Jerry Ford. Or Nixon himself, for that matter. Serious people think twice before tearing their own nation apart.

That first day of Congress, when AOC was part of a “protest” in the Speaker’s office has set the tone.  Nancy is not charge until she proves it by kneecapping the upstarts.   The ripples of campaign finance issues with AOC might turn out to be that kneecapping.

She just HAD to close with the “He’s not worth it,” as if to say Trump is an insect… maybe to appease the far left crowd but actually that remark could be a signal to smarter people that they don’t have enough goods to make a case other than to just romp and stomp to compensate for the Mueller disappointment. So why put on an ultimately pointless extravaganza that will upstage other business, and ensure that even more people question their patriotism as well as their basic sanity?

If Trump were to somehow get removed from office, say, by June of this year, Mike Pence would become president.  It’s hard to see how the Democrats would benefit from replacing Trump with Pence.

But we would have a much more stable President.

By transforming him into a religious fanatic and kicking him to the curb in 2020.  I’m not condoning it, but he’s easier to beat than Trump.

Jon Gabriel, Ed.: “Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country. And he’s just not worth it.”

Pelosi is expressing her contempt, shared by the Bush wing of the Republican Party, and frustration that she lacks the political backing to successfully erase this presidency and the 2016 election results. John Hinderaker takes the skin off W in Churchill, Trump, and George W. Bush:

Having no reason to doubt Roberts’ account, I take it that at a private dinner at the Dallas Country Club, former President George W. Bush suggested that he might have been the last Republican President ever, on the ground that Donald Trump doesn’t count. And maybe after Trump there will be no more Republicans.

I have never thought of W as an arrogant man–on the contrary–but this attitude reeks of the ignorant contempt with which the establishment, in all its many branches, views President Trump. In what way is Trump not a “real” Republican? I can think of one: he is not a budget hawk. But then, I don’t recall either of the Bushes being much of a budget hawk, either, when in office. At least Trump didn’t run as one.
    […]
The sad thing, in my view, is that W apparently has joined the establishment. He thinks Trump isn’t a Republican, and the Republican Party likely has no future after the current aberrant office-holder. News flash, W: the cause of freedom didn’t die when you moved back to Texas. The Republican Party stands for liberty, for limited government, for a strong foreign policy, for a better life for ALL Americans, not just app developers and Wall Street wizards. And guess what, George: Donald Trump, for all his faults, has done a better job of advancing these ideals than you did.

President Trump is doing well by doing good, to the detriment of the Democrats who seek to erase his presidency.

I agree.  I did not expect to see a Republican elected again but we got Trump.  I doubt I will see another R in office in my lifetime.  The Federal government is a Democrat enterprise.  It will not tolerate a master not of its own choosing again in the future.

I think it is this.  And don’t forget Pelosi has been around for awhile and remembers the GOP idiocy in impeaching Clinton and does not intend to duplicate that mistake.

They need to impeach Trump.  Make it a real show trail.  Maybe execute him.  Show their true colors.

The hopes seemed to be pinned now on Trump’s overall operation being laid low by the U.S. Atttorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York (which National Review’s Andrew McCarthy — who’s become more and more skeptical about the Mueller probe over the past 8-10 months — says could be a problem, because Michael Cohen might not know anything about Russian collusion. But he might have some information on any corner-cutting by the Trump Organization)

Scary that Pelosi now speaks for the remaining sane wing of her party.  Sorta like how weird would it have to get such that Pol Pot was regarded as the voice of humane moderation in the Khmer Rouge… Things are indeed weird.
