Citizen Trump

This is a fascinating video of Donald Trump critiquing Citizen Kane – the iconic film on wealth and moral corruption. It’s a little surreal watching a much younger Trump wrestle with the meaning of the movie. Even his body language seems to pull the curtain back a little. “Perhaps I can understand that…” when talking about the distance growing between a husband and wife. Sad — and I mean that in the most sincere way.

The President is a lightning rod for all sorts of commentary. Even here on Ricochet, one doesn’t have to go far to see lines drawn. But lost in the media maelstrom is the simple fact that Donald Trump is a man like any other. He does terrific things — he does reckless things. He talks about being isolated and the need to “have your guard up, more so than if your didn’t have wealth.” He’s a man that understands walls.

The editing makes it seem as if he thinks the first wife was the second wife. The ending is hilarious, because while it’s a simplistic view of the character and the story . . . he ain’t wrong.

I love that Trump’s advice for Charles Foster Kane was “get yourself another woman.”  This from a man who cheated on his first wife with his second wife, who cheated on his second wife with his third wife, and then cheated on his third with with a porn star and 1998 Playboy Playmate of the Year.

Well, it looks like Trump has succeeded in being happy. I wonder sometimes if his optimism and contentment is what most bothers his enemies.

I’m not sure when this was made, I think before he had real financial difficulties in the 90’s and while he was married to his first wife, Ivanna. Since then he’s experienced difficult financial times, a lot of ridicule ( even before he ran for President) made much more money and became an international businessman and world famous and finally found the right woman for him. So I would expect the 72 year-old Trump would have more insights and wisdom.

Trump is no Pauline Kael- that’s for sure – but the fact that he sees something in Citizen Kane at all, that he even watched such a film, tells us something. (Here we see an early exposure of one of his flaws: he tends to place too much significance on a wrong aspect. It was the thing Rosebud, not the word Rosebud.)

Does anyone think Obama or  W Bush have even seen Citizen Kane? ( it’s in black and white remember).

Ultimately, Trump is playing a game, and I mean that in a non- disparaging way. He likes to accomplish things, build things, navigate through the world, through swamps and jungles. That’s fun for him. Money ( after a certain point) is just a way of keeping score. I don’t think he has an unhealthy relationship with it. He has respect for it.

Now as a politician he’s playing a similar game, and he’s learning rapidly.

Trump is a guy who has had, and will have a happy life, not because of any success per se but because he’s fully engaged in playing the game.

He has great kids who love him, grandchildren and a very fine wife, Melania. Oh, and he’s President of the United States. He’s happy because he chooses to be happy. I think Norman Vincent Peale May just have a pretty darn good approach!

It was actually “get yourself a different woman,” but you got the gist.

Not good advice, from my point of view, but you have to admit that Trump was no hypocrite in this regard.

If I recall correctly, you have never actually been married. Is that correct? If so congratulations on your impeccable record of loyalty to your virtual wife!

I have been married and I was faithful.  And yes, I judge infidelity negatively.

If you didn’t cheat on your wife, you aren’t a true conservative!
