Californians, Please Help My Brother’s Big Cats

Hey, Ricochet friends in the Golden State. My brother runs a facility, Project Survival’s Cat Haven in the town of Dunlap, in the mountains outside of Fresno. He has all kinds of big cats (lions, tigers, leopards) on display to raise awareness of the needs of cats in the wild. He does great work for wildlife preservation. But animal rights activists in the state are advocating legislation that would greatly hamper his work. Please take a moment to read a letter by my brother (Dale Anderson) and consider doing what you can to stop this harmful legislation:

Friends, We have learned that California SB 313 is far worse than originally thought. This is a major attack on captive facilities in California by animal activist groups PETA, Social Compassion in Legislation (SCIL), Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) to name a few. The tactics are the same, make the situation sound bad, come in with a solution that sounds reasonable, give it a good name and deceive everyone.

In short, if this bill is made into law the Cat Haven will no longer be able move an animal on or off the property period. We would not be able to replace Titan with another lion because we would not be able to transport a lion to the Cat Haven. We would not be able to bring animals back from a fire evacuation because we would be moving to the Cat Haven for an activity prohibited by law. I know you must be saying this is crazy and I say yes it is, but this is what animal activists like those listed above have become. They make the bill look like it is to stop circuses but that is not their real long term goal.

They have been planning this for some time now and we are behind the curve. I don’t think the bill can be stopped, but they can change the wording to exempt all licensed California facilities. There are currently no circuses based in California. With new wording, only circuses coming into the state would be banned from bringing animals. So is that really their goal, this can be fixed and we can continue to operate.

I know this takes effort to do and I hate to have people do things that take time out of their day but we really need help with this situation. It is the worst law that could possibly be other than banning all cats in California, and they might try that next. They introduced Federal Law this week also to put a ban on big cats. That will be our next call for help, but today it is the State of California

*If you live in California contact your local State Senator and urge them to change the language in SB 313 to exempt all licensed California facilities.

* Any and every one send a written letter to:
The Honorable Henry Stern
Chair, Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee
California State Senate
State Capitol
Sacramento, CA 95814

I know for some it has been awhile since you have put pen to paper but we really need this to happen. This is the first committee to hear comments. Next will be Judiciary.

The letter should be simple and say you oppose SB 313 and if you are not going to stop the bill change the wording to not hurt places like Project Survival like exempting all California licensed facilities, .

Thank you all for helping, keep sending letters and you can call the and email also. This is a fight we cannot lose.

Will be doing this tomorrow. It is insane how PETA and other groups like them  hurt the very animals they claim to love.

Thanks for letting us know about this. Your brother’s work is very important. I hope it can continue.

My experience with California lawmakers is that they like to propose the most outrageous laws possible so that people rise up and protest.  After the protest, the lawmakers scale back the law to be almost as outrageous but the protesters get to feel like they changed things.  This reinforces the state mandate of teaching people in schools to become activists.

Second, I don’t see the value in scaling back to exempt licensed facilities.  That’s nothing but rent seeking.

I think your brother needs to sell his animals out of state as fast as possible and leave the state.  There is no hope for them.  I left in 1996.  I never looked back.  They’ve only gotten worse and will continue to worsen.  No one with sense should remain there any longer.

I don’t live in CA, or I would totally help out. Would this bill also hurt zoos? Because I don’t see how it can hurt a specialized operation like this Cat Haven and not also hit something like the San Francisco Zoo.

Nj passed something similar last year. The NJ law says you cannot transport “elephants and other wild or exotic animals” to be used in “animal act, carnival, circus, display, exhibition, exposition, fair, parade, petting zoo, presentation, public showing, race, ride, trade show, or similar undertaking in which animals perform tricks, give rides, or participate as accompaniments for the entertainment, amusement, or benefit of a live audience.

Although the politicians say this is aimed at the circus, the wording seems like it would also block educational shows from zoos, etc. What is promoted as something good for animals actually is attacking the places that do the most good for these animals and provide awareness and education to the next generation of animal lovers.

Didn’t the circus go out of business?

It is amazing what these clowns have the time to do.

    Eustice,

Typical nonsense from the scatterbrained left. They fix one thing and ruin 7 others while they’re doing it.

One other thing, the lynx is just beautiful. Put up more photos of the big cats, please.

    Regards,

    Jim

I visited this facility many years ago when my wife, kids, and I were visiting my parents in the Fresno area. A marvelous experience, and a great refuge for the animals. I’m from out of state, but certainly endorse your efforts.

Have him email me and we’ll have him on our podcast. I love Cats big and small. I just finished The Tiger which is an amazing book about Siberian tigers. Our podcast isn’t big but still. Have him email me at aaron.c.gleason@biola.edu. Have you guys tried submitting an Op-Ed or even just contacted the tip line to the LA Times or the papers in that area? Also I’m “friends” with Larry Mantle of KPCC, I bet he’d love to have him on or knows somebody that might have a better public radio show to cover this. Try contacting The Daily Wire too, I have a couple emails for editors there.
