So what? We can’t get felony approval for anything without finding twenty witnesses, a dozen surveillance cameras, a victim interview, the offender’s mother’s statement AND a confession on video…..and even then, it’s probably going to be a C.I. (Continuing Investigation) until such time as God himself descends from Heaven to declare “This [redacted] is GUILTY and has forfeited his eternal reward.”
The back story on this quote is that that the State Attorney for Chicago, an elected position recused herself from the Smollett case.
Published in PolicingBut on Wednesday afternoon, one of Foxx’s aides released a statement to the Tribune about the state’s attorney’s interactions with Smollett’s family after he reported the attack in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood on Jan. 29.
“Shortly after the incident occurred in late January, State’s Attorney Foxx had conversations with a family member of Jussie Smollett about the incident and their concerns, and facilitated a connection to the Chicago Police Department who were investigating the incident,” said Robert Foley, a senior adviser to Foxx.
It was the modus operandi of the previous administration to assure us that, though no details would be forthcoming now, we’d get “all the facts just as soon as we know them.”
That’s the Chicago way.
The States Attorney’s office has public relations flacks for dealing with families, friends, and whatnot. You refer whoever is on the phone to someone with zero responsibility for the investigation/prosecution.
This should not be an elected position.

The city sure needs men like that. I’m sure the police department is lucky to have him but would hope a guy like that would consider the mayor’s position- it could use people like him.

I doubt he wants the mayor’s job. He probably wouldn’t like all the political game playing. However, he expressed very honestly the real interests of the real citizens of Chicago. They’ve got plenty of problems. They don’t need a spoiled idiot misusing the city’s reputation for his own personal gain. Much less wasting police resources. Much less fomenting even more racial paranoia.
The speech was a breath of fresh air.

Yes! it was a beautiful speech. It was everything White Americans wanted to hear.
I predict this beautiful speech will be used by the defense lawyers, whom will claim they cannot possibly get a fair trial for Jussie, because all of America had that speech.
Even changing venues will be useless. Jussie will be put on probation, with community service and counseling for his crimes.
I have already seen the spin in social media. he didn’t commit a crime, he was deranged. He doesn’t need or deserve punishment, he needs our sympathy, compassion and support.

From reading the DA proffer, it seems to me that the Chicago Police knew very early in their investigation that Smollett set this all up, and that his fake attackers were two black men being paid to stage the attack.
That they knew all this while observing Smollett out doing the talk show circuit telling his fake story probably really angered them. They likely had to keep quiet while waiting for the “attackers” to return from Africa. (Upon which they were immediately taken into custody.)
Check out the link above. It’s a fascinating document. Lots of interesting details about the investigation. They had these guys on lots and lots of surveillance cameras and likely knew almost immediately that they weren’t white.
It is everything Chicago has wanted to hear since that twerp called the cops while still wearing that rope around his neck.
And DNA. You gotta have DNA. Jurors don’t know what DNA is, but they saw it on TV and they know you gotta have DNA.

Absolutely, the Chicago police exercised patience and restraint, two qualities that are really necessary to gain the high ground. I doubt that a shifty defense attorney will be able to shake this.

Every time I read this quote I can’t stop laughing. My partner and I made an arrest and on the way to booking our subject starting taunting us by calling us stupid, and then went on to describe all the crimes he had committed that did not result in his arrest. I was the driver. I glanced at my partner and he was writing them all down in his notebook. Needless to say we wrote a second report for detectives. I took my foot off the gas to slow down the car until he was all done. I put my foot on the gas again when he all he had to offer was the litany of; I can’t believe how stupid you guys are, that was repeated over, and over again.
Hah! I don’t know how it is elsewhere, but one doesn’t become lieutenant, captain, commander, let alone superintendent without political game playing. Make no mistake: Eddie Johnson is a political game player or else he wouldn’t be superintendent.
And Eddie Johnson enabled all these wasted resources. He’s no citizen’s hero here. Leaving aside the fact that it was apparent early on that the charges were fishy and yet Johnson put all these resources onto the case anyway, there is the other part of this where there is no way in hell that this would have received all of the resources it did if Smollett weren’t “famous”. No stolen or damaged property, no injuries. How many detectives, attorneys, and patrolmen were devoted to this? When I was jumped by a couple gang bangers and had to fight them, a detective responded to the call but I never heard from anyone again because the guys disappeared and there was really nothing left to do anyway. I wasn’t seriously or even moderately injured and no property was stolen. Eddie Johnson should have assigned a detective and provided the cover for any media firestorm: “we have limited resources, we’ve assigned the resources we would assign to any Chicagoan’s complaint, but the case hasn’t even been established yet anyway.” That would have been brave; I would have voted for that guy.
In Philly the local CBS Affiliate News Radio station is spinning this as “the right-wing media attackers who cast doubt on Smollett are going to dissuade future victims from reporting crimes, thus furthering the repression of the LBGTQMNOP community”
The guilt of Smollett is now being glossed over in favor of scolding the right on a much broader topic.
I guess for the left-wing media it’s yet another example of not letting any crisis go to waste
You may very well be correct that Eddie Johnson was cowtowing to the celebrity, but let me pose an alternate possibility – which I believe is entirely likely given all the details in the Proffer linked above.
As you state, the resources thrown at the Smollette case were excessive, and for a mundane crime the police response would have been far less intensive.
But it seems that early on the Police sensed that the whole thing was a scam. However, given the level of sympathetic media attention given to the case, accusing Smollette without rock solid incontrovertible evidence would open up a firestorm of Progressive vitriol that would impact the entire prosecution. I would venture that the excessive police attention might NOT have been to track down the (imaginary) perpetrators, but to quickly and thoroughly put together a complete case against the actual perpetrator getting all the Media attention.
