Where can I get one of their watches?

I like his explanation. It seems measured and thoughtful. I don’t wear a watch, but I immediately ordered one for my son and in the comments on the order, said I appreciated the ad.

    From their website;

Forged as a tribute to the bond between a son and his father, Égard produces exceptional timepieces that do more than simply tell time — they capture moments.

    From the op-ed:

I also feel that suffering needs to stop being a competition. It shouldn’t be “women vs men.” There are areas where men have it terrible in society. It’s OK to look at those areas and acknowledge it, while also understanding that women have it terrible in other aspects of society. Neither one has to dismiss the other.

Their stuff is not my style but they also have some simple bracelets. I’m going to support them as well.

Edited to add this that just appeared on the website:

Do to the unexpected overwhelming response we are back-ordered on many units. Please bear with us. We are accepting pre-orders as we are making new inventory. The response is beyond appreciated.

That is a much-needed message. It addresses both problems–the image of men and how badly men, as an identifiable demographic group, are faring in the modern western world. If the statistics looked the same for any other group, the sociology and public health sectors of the research and academic world would be saying “Oppression!”

Decades ago, I read a book by a feminist who was well known and respected in the university English departments, Mary Ann Ferguson. She was a superb writer, and the book was called The Image of Women in Literature. “Literature” was used broadly to include what we now call the mass media. The book was depressing, frankly, and it was not at all surprising that women were doing as badly as they were mentally and emotionally given the constant demeaning messages they were swamped by every day. Drug and alcohol use, suicide, depression, and failure to achieve were widespread among women. The cumulative effect of the demeaning messages in literature and the media was terrible. It was those numbers that fueled the emotion that led to change in how women were represented in books and other media. Not a day goes by these last few years that I don’t think of that book and wish someone would write a similar one for men.

It is driving me crazy because the way the media was treating women was somewhat forgivable given that we really did not fully appreciate the cumulative impact it was having on women generally. I forgive people who really don’t know how bad they are being. But that is not the case here. We know now how harmful such messages are to people. And we are seeing very predictable self-destructive behaviors among men because of it.

It makes me very angry at the world. I don’t even know whom to direct my ire at. The crime is so big and so shadowy.

An ad that doesn’t just make a statement but actually helps sell your product. I wonder if anyone is more likely to buy Gillette because of their ad?

Don’t know much about Egard watches but they are self winding which is nice. I hate having watch batteries that go dead.

What a wonderful response. What a positive message. You always get more with honey than you do with vinegar. Gillette’s ad was a scold. It was a downer, a bummer. It gave no positive reinforcement. Like @davidcarroll said, where can I buy one of his watches?

Excellent.  I want one of his watches too.

This reminds me of an old blues song by Blind Willie Johnson, “What is the Soul of a Man.”

    Well won’t somebody tell me
    Answer if you can!
I want somebody to tell me
Just what is the soul of a man?

    Update from their website:

The positive response to our message has allowed us to start donating to charities! We will be donating $10,000 USD To the Bob Woodruff Foundation this week! We hope to continue making numerous donations year round. Thank you all for giving us an opportunity to give back.

Due to the unexpected overwhelming response we are back-ordered on many units. Please bear with us. We are accepting pre-orders as we are making new inventory. The response is beyond appreciated. Every order will be fulfilled. We want to be completely transparent about the wait.

    Great AD. Great Post.

As MarciN hinted at, Men are discriminated against by today’s American government in many ways that have hurt millions of both men and women.

Both men and women have destructive instinctual impulses, perhaps of equal measure,  that interact in very complex ways as a system in such a way that make the inferences of male toxicity implied by the Gillette ad  simply bigoted and  disgusting.

I don’t need another watch. But I’ve set an alert for myself for May 1st, to obtain one of these watches.

Somehow my husband had remained oblivious to this entire issue. I sent him both commercials and he is now trying to decide just which of the watches he is going to order – he’s a watch guy anyway. I’d get one too but they are just not my style.

A couple of them look pretty nice.  My reservation is that they seem to be windup watches rather than battery run.  I have one of those with the same type of side buttons that control the various functions,  and I’m not particularly fond of it.  It’s cumbersome.  I prefer a battery run watch.

I prefer battery-powered watches also.  I’ve never owned a self-winding watch that didn’t need winding, even when I wore it every day.  I still think I might get one of these on principle . . .

You need a watch winder! I have always preferred quartz battery operated watches also but a couple of years ago I bought a Citizen Eco-Drive watch which is light powered and it is my go-to watch now. I usually leave it on the bathroom counter and that seems to be enough light to keep it running. I love it.

I do have a solar watch too and it works great.  If the Egard watches were solar I wouldn’t have any qualms.

My main watch is a Japanese Casio that keeps radio time and is solar – so it is literally futz-free.

I have owned automatic wtches, and love them. They always stay ound up through normal use. My problem is that they are inherently more fragile (moving parts) and I am often engaged in all kinds of work that may lead to breakage. Even rough-housing with the kids can break an automatic watch.

I bought an Egard for son #2. And if @kidcoder (#1 Son) wants one for HIS birthday, too, I could do that.
