SJWs Have Invaded the Actuarial Profession
I just filled out a survey for the Casualty Actuarial Society. For gender, it gave the options:
- Female
- Male
- Non-Binary
- Prefer not to say.
The world has gone mad and STEM is no exception to the rule.
Can an artificial intelligence running on standard 0/1 computing ever be considered non-binary? Just wondering.
No bit.
Absolutely nuts.
Sooooo…..
Given that the actuarial folks are totally absorbed with numbers and statistics is this just a sneaky way to select a group of individuals. Maybe there is data that says that people who are non-binary have a higher suicide rate? Or a higher need for health services? Or are more likely to use recreational drugs? Or are more likely to wear high platform shoes? Or are more likely to live within a mile of a whole foods? There are plenty of ways to apply the results
It’s a data point. I think they are just being sneaky.
I think the “Follow the path of least resistance” is still the world’s rule. Not to do it would be a sin against the gods of Diversity, Inclusion, and the Higher Equality. Besides, it doesn’t cost anything to be nice, they’ll say. And it is always so nice to be able to pat an inferior on the head, don’t you know.
Or yourself on the back.
I’m hoping that “Prefer not to say” becomes a consistent fourth option, so I can choose it if there’s more than “male” and “female.” If the survey wants less data, I’ll oblige.

Cui bono? More genders ===> more actuarial tables ===> more job security for actuaries.

Ok, they will do that on their bureaucratic paperwork but if I want to buy life insurance, can an actuary produce tables with the life expectancy of a Non-binary?
I’m sure you’re painfully familiar with the hackneyed joke that an accountant can be defined as “an actuary with a sense of humor.”
Given the SJW/trans involvement in this particular situation, you just know that they’re going to take that humorlessness to a whole new level…
If they are trying to squash the stereotype of actuaries being low testosterone, beta male nerds with little to no sexual appeal…..then they failed big time. No thanks, guys.
Curious if this is SJW or just an appeal to real weirdos within the profession.
Or maybe, the CAS leadership, knowing they’re not experts in designing and conducting surveys, contracted with an outside firm (Association Research, Inc.) — and that outside firm’s standard set of demographic questions is the problem.
Yes, I wondered if that was the problem. However, somebody at the CAS was OK with using non-binary as a category.
As an actuary, I’m more disturbed by the confusion of sex and gender among practitioners. For example, one should expect mortality to vary based on sex, not declared gender, because it’s a biological phenomenon.
I’m genuinely curious, though, whether people who identify as trans or non-binary might exhibit different mortality, whether by suicide (notoriously high among trans individuals) or because of some other cause. There is a known relationship between morbidity and mental illness, so to the extent there may be different mental processes at work, they may manifest in different health and mortality profiles.
Similarly, could there be a difference in auto claims? Especially if there are cultural and even hormonal factors involved in aggression and driving behavior, gender may be a better predictor than sex. (Though as an underwriter, I’m not sure I’d want to give a man a lower rate just by declaring he’s a woman….)
I’m guessing the CAS staff member or volunteer did a risk-reward calculation, and concluded there was more risk in offending people who insist on these options being there than in offending people who think they shouldn’t.
And all at the same time.
I really do think the urge to be a padrone or lord to the poor underlings (whoever’s cause you select to champion) is a powerful motive in the sjw movement. Not a good fit with a democracy, one would think. Odd how the left is so busy proclaiming that people are NOT created or birthed equal in this world.
Count your blessings. A mere four choices, is practically conservative.
There were a number of questions in the survey about diversity. It’s a good thing that I no longer work in a large organization where HR is controlled by SJWs.

I am soooooooo glad that my company doesn’t have an HR department. All of our “admin” tasks are handled by the CEO’s wife, who, though very liberal and living in Portland, is extremely practical.
Most of my “administrative headache” consists of making sure my Uber receipts line up correctly with what I submit.
