New Year’s Tradition
We got married in 1974, so this is the 45th year that we’ve been riding on his motorcycle together. We started this tradition of riding on New Year’s Day the first year (1975) we spent New Year’s together. We rode down to the ocean in San Diego. There have been several different motorcycles, and we’ve lived in four different states. Back then, he was in the Navy, and we were still reveling in a winter with no snow, and no below-zero temperatures. The last few years, we’ve been making a record of our ride. As long as we can still both get on and ride this bike, we’ll keep taking these photos. Today, in the Mojave Desert, at noon, it was still only 44 degrees, though. So, I think I prefer San Diego.

Yes, well…he’ll probably never cut his hair again…As we prepared for going to work each day, I get to braid it. I wear my hair long, too–my whole adult life. But his is now officially longer than mine.
He only started photographing this ride a few years ago. Before, it was the ride that mattered. One year, in high school, he’d bet his friend he would ride his motorcycle to school every day…and the friend remembers how he’d wrapped a rope around the rear tire of his Honda so that he could go the two blocks on a snow-covered road. I wasn’t his girlfriend at that point, but I did recognize his tenacity…or maybe boneheaded-ness??

I grow mine to donate. It’s probably beyond donation length now, so I’ll be looking spiffy and trimmed again soon. Then I’ll grow it for another two years, etc.
