Jordan Peterson and Dave Rubin Leaving Patreon
In the video, Peterson and Rubin discuss their reasons for leaving the Patreon crowdfunding platform, which has been very beneficial for both of them. Peterson has stated in other videos that he makes approximately $80,000/month on the Patreon platform. Peterson has also stated that he makes roughly between $35,000 to $50,000 per appearance for his lectures or on-stage discussions and he additionally has a business that garners roughly $200,000/month in revenue.
Peterson and Rubin also discuss the mounting censorship control by many of the leading social media platforms and the encroachment of credit card companies who are working with these platforms to censor free speech. Their action comes in the wake of Patreon’s deplatforming of Sargon of Akkad (aka Carl Benjamin) and Sam Harris’ departure from Patreon in protest of Patreon’s move.
I don’t think there is any question that there is a need for alternative social media and crowdfunding platforms dedicated to free speech. Peterson and Rubin are exploring creating a Patreon alternative. Where are the conservative angel investors who could help jump start these alternative platforms — The Murdoch family, Peter Thiel, the Koch brothers? Anyone? Bueller?
Interesting.
Well…join MeWe on the paid tier. Please.
Unbelievable. The thought came to me that when my husband orders ammunition on line, what might the credit card company think? H.m.m….. Fascinating video, Brian. Thanks
I think they should concentrate on payment systems; paypal, visa/mastercard etc. are basically colluding to kill alternatives to patreon, twitter, and youtube.
Any alternative will be deplatformed like subscribestar was within days.
The question is, how long before sites like ricochet lose payment processing ability. It is a nontrivial business risk.
I think it’s a question of the bank that any future/alternative platform partners with and how “non-woke” from a Leftist perspective that institution is. One must hope that there is some banking institution still in business that doesn’t kowtow to the Leftist/post-modernist cabal and their dictates.
Peter Thiel already did PayPal, but he stepped out of that and it has it’s own issues. Not as bad as Patreon, though.
If PayPal could commit to ideological neutrality, they could move into the crowdfunding arena, but I doubt they would want to.
Conservatives are too… safe… for innovation. It is a liberal mindset (this needs to change to be better) that innovates and a conservative mindset that points out the blindspots. We need each other. While we have this extreme polarization, liberals will innovate and collapse rapidly while conservatives stick with the “safe” options until things stabilize again.
We need the creator/change mindset.
@brianwatt can this stop? I’ve spent my entire life watching this leftward tilt without getting the sense that there is any way to curb it. This is utter garbage this deplatforming/censorship thing but all I see is them getting more creative then doing a version of it anyway until we give up. Make me feel better, please.
Make political opinion a protected class or start work to completely cut society into 2.
I thought Patreon was a vodka.
Insert shrug emoji here.
I thought it was tequila.
Shows how much I know about hard liquor.
What are the chances that Ricochet would be willing to sponsor podcasts by Mr. Rubin and Mr.Peterson?
You can support the anti-trust complaint
With all due respect to Ricochet, I don’t think they need another venue to host their video content. To be clear, Peterson and Rubin have not been deplatformed by YouTube (owned by Google)…yet. They currently don’t have an issue getting their message out. As stated in the video, they are taking donations to keep their respective ventures going on their own respective websites and will continue to do so until they feel their own funding platform is ready and stable and then transfer supporters’ accounts to it.
My guess is that if their new funding platform gets off the ground, then they will need people to keep it going, especially if it begins to host other/similar voices. If this is the eventual plan, then additional investors may be required to keep the venture going.
Ok, this has finally pushed me over the edge. I’ve just written a letter to Citibank to cancel my Mastercard account.
If you do much digging at all, it’s pretty apparent that Mastercard is the driving force behind these policies.
Citibank is also advocating for restrictions on firearm magazines, “assault rifles,” and is using its position as a payment processor to force downstream businesses to refuse sales of handguns to people under the age of 21.
Time to vote with my feet.
I’ve never used Patreon, and rarely used Paypal so don’t have any leverage there. I’ll also be on the lookout for businesses working with Swipe, and only make payments in cash there if possible.
We need alternatives, but we also need to push back on the systems already in place and being abused. Maybe if it starts costing them money, they’ll find it’s in their best interest to return to their previous positions as neutral payment processors.
Agreed. I was thinking more in terms of Ricochet benefiting from having them as part of their stable of podcasts. Jordan Peterson and David Rubin would benefit from having yet another outlet for their video content, sort of a mini-backup in case they were deplatformed elsewhere. That said , I don’t know enough about the business end of these things to know if it could work.
Sam Harris on why he left Patreon:
Rebel Wisdom on the deplatforming of Sargon of Akkad:
Speaking directly with a representative from Patreon. Very interesting.
Sargon’s (Carl Benjamin’s) video examining why he was deplatformed by Patreon.
And this:
The Mastercard/ Visa side of this concerns me more than pay pal and patreon. Mastercard and Visa are far more prevalent in day-to-day transactions than 3rd party digital payment services are.
How do you undercut them, though? Every debit card in existence is MC or V. No cutting that corner unless you pay with cash or check for everything. How do MC and V benefit from debit card use? Do they benefit through ATM withdrawal?
It’s a new twist on “too big to fail.”
