A President and a Gentleman: George H. W. Bush

As the country mourns the passing of President George H. W. Bush, C. Boyden Gray and Haley Barbour join Peter Robinson to discuss fond memories of his leadership, friendship, humility, and legacy. They discuss the 41st president’s involvement in the Clean Air Act, the reputational teeter-totter the public had with him and Reagan, and his foreign policy decisions.

Recorded on December 5, 2018.

The man whose resume made him most ever qualified to be President. RIP . . .

The man was a good man. He believed that people in general are fair and good. He was wrong. At least as far as his counterpart world leaders go. The big difference between Bush and Reagan is that both believed that humans were good, but as he famously stated, Reagan insisted on verification. Dang, I wish I could properly attribute this. I can’t. But I recently read, “Sometimes you need a Mother Teresa, and sometimes you need a Dirty Harry”. I was not a Trump fan in 2016. I even voted against him. But I now believe we need that Dirty Harry. And we sure as all need his wall. It worked wonders in Israel. It would help us immensely as well.

Great interview.  Peter Robinson is among the best interviewers in media.  I wish he had a network or cable program.

I didn’t know about the graves disease but it was obvious something was wrong.  I thought he just didn’t want to win as there was no oomph in him and I blamed it and the recession on his tax increase.

Agree with the criticism about Iraq but not with Noriega.  He was poorly advised on both Panama and Haiti.   People around him were convinced that we could topple governments in both places by imposing general sanctions. I knew it was profoundly wrong headed.   What it got us was boat people from Haiti and the need to invade and severe economic strains in Panama and the need to invade.   The good thing that came out of the invasion of Panama was that the Sandinistas felt compelled to have elections which they would not held had Bush not invaded Panama because Bush was undoing Reagan’s efforts to get rid of the Sandinistas.

Thank you for this interview, Peter. I enjoyed every second of it.

I don’t think a stronger force exists on planet earth than friendship and respect. That was the force that Ronald Reagan and George Bush created. That’s why they accomplished so much.

I am guilty of enjoying having my own impressions of the relationship and accomplishments of Reagan and 41 confirmed. :-)

Thank you again. Merry Christmas, Peter.
