This Friendship Was a Special Blessing for One of Them

This story, which is making the rounds, reminds me that we all need friends. Famous people are famously lonely and famously unhealthy. They famously have a lack of people who they can trust to enjoy them for their human qualities as opposed to their fame, wealth or status.

I don’t take from this story that Lin Wang was lucky to know Charles Barkley. I take that Barkley was wise to cultivate a friendship with a guy who could be normal in Barkley’s presence.

More proof that we all put our pants on one leg at a time.

By random chance I had dinner within Charles one night.  He’s a great guy.  Exactly who he seems to be.

Beautiful.  I’ll write about it one day.

I’ve heard that Michael Jordan has a group of buddies who never ask anything from him.  For a wealthy celebrity, it must be nice to find people who have no ulterior motives but just like to socialize with them.

I’m not around a lot of celebrities, especially given where I live.

But the few times I encounter them, I’m reluctant to bother them — well, I never bother them.  One reason is, I don’t like to intrude.  But another is, I don’t want to be disappointed in them.

A lot of his friends know they can take money off him on the golf course.

Dang.  Hard to finish reading as my screen got pretty blurry towards the end.

(Thank you for posting this; quite lovely.)

I’ve been blessed to make acquaintances with many a former athlete in my line of work. There are a few jerks, but on the whole mostly great guys (and gals.) There is something about the meritocracy of sports that keeps you humble.

That is a sweet and lovely story. I love that two people, who seemingly would have nothing in common, were actually best friends, and it was simply based on human kindness. That makes me proud to be a human.
