Ricochet Meetup Day, Fort Lauderdale—A Success!

We had a wonderful time meeting at Tap 42 before the National Review cruise left the next day! Since my photos were so poor, I’ve included some of my photos from Butterfly World nearby, which are a bit better. (You really must visit there if you’re ever in South Florida!)

Barkha Herman, James Lileks, Boss Mongo, Susan Quinn and her husband Jerry, Stad and Neutral Observer, and formerlawprof got caught up or acquainted, telling stories about all of you who weren’t there! (Just kidding.) I have two pictures because I didn’t get everyone in just one:

Around the table from left to right is formerlawprof, Neutral Observer, Stad, Barkha Herman, Jerry Quinn, Boss Mongo and Susan Quinn

This is a better shot of Neutral Observer (in stripes) and James Lileks across from her.

And to make up for my poor photography, here are sweets for the eyes:

Ricochet meetups are more fun than should be legal! So jelly.

Man, someone give me an excuse to plan another one! Is there an event coming up people are planning to attend in Colorado Springs or vicinity?

Aw, now you’re making me homesick; I lived in Parker, CO for 10 years . . .

It was, as is the norm for SFL meetups, awesome.

Little known facts that came out of the meetup:

@formerlawprof is so smart, you get smarter just listening to him.

@susanquinn is so engaging, you don’t even mind all the pictures of butterflies foisted upon you.

-@jameslileks is as awesome and erudite in person as he is on podcasts (okay, probably not a little known fact).

@stad is probably one of the most good-natured people I (we?) have ever met.  I now grok much better his bon vivant posts and comments.

@neutralobserver is every bit as classy and tasteful as one would expect, being as she puts up with Stad (uh, in a good way).

@barkhaherman is so badass, she talks hunting with her vegan friends and wears her sari to NRA meetings.

Lovely time, with this crew.  If you’re ever headed to SFL, make it a reason for a meetup.

Oh, you poor thing! You survived the foisting very well! So good to see you, @bossmongo. And a great summary of all of us. Thanks.

Oh, two things I inadvertently left out, but should be in:

Jerry Quinn, the lovely Mrs. @susanquinn‘s husband, was awesome as always (sorry, I left him out of the original blast on account of I can’t throw an “@” at him).  I swear, he never, not once, rolled his eyes while Ms. Susan was showing me butterfly pictures.  Pinky swear.

And, we didn’t get a chance to meet @barkhaherman‘s Mr. Herman on account of (I kid thee not) he’s out climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro.  How don’t-get-much-more-awesome-than-that awesome is that?

I should go after you for that smart alec remark, @bossmongo. Then again, you might bring your AK-47 to the next meet-up!

Sorry I was a no show. My designated driver hubby was real tired after doing all the driving so I let him opt for early bedtime. Two of the speakers I dined with on the cruise were Rob Long and James Lileks. I have some pics I will post later with some thoughts.  We also dined with Deroy Murdock and Jonah Goldberg. Rob and Jonah recorded a podcast that should be up soon.  Next cruise is last week of August from Montreal to Boston.

We had dinner with James Lileks, George Nash AND John Miller (with Amy Miller), and Jonah Goldberg.

All we can say is “Wow!”

Even the regular, non-panelist diners were fun to meet and chat with …

James Lileks toasting ricochet.  Folks, we had a great time and wish y’all would join us.  Next cruise will be the end of August, sailing from Quebec to Boston.

Rob Long is in that circle.  All you can see is his head.  No, I didn’t recognize him from afar.  When we continued our walk and passed by, we recognized him enjoying a little quiet spot in the water, away from the crowd.  It didn’t occur to me to take one at supper the night we sat at his table.

Hmmm.  That last one reminds me of the scene in League of Their Own when the movie news was showing closeups of all the players and ended with, and there is Marla Hootch, with an equally distant shot.

Did you fly or drive back?  We didn’t hit rain until halfway between SC welcome station and I-26, but it was pretty rotten after that.

A stressful trip after a stressful week took its toll on my hubby.  He did all the driving.  I really hope you will consider doing these cruises some day.  It is like having a ricochet meetup every day.
