Quote of the Day: Kavanaugh Is Up to the Challenge

“Justice Thomas, who also faced false last-minute allegations during his nominating process, has spent more than a quarter-century on the court doing his job, staying true to his judicial principles, and not giving a damn what the Washington Post and CNN have to say about him. It’s unfortunate that the newest justice faces a similar task, but I’m guessing he’s up to it.” — Jason Riley, Wall Street Journal

The Left will continue to harangue us about Justice Kavanaugh and attack the man, but ultimately I believe he will be admired for his resilience under fire, for his passion for defending his reputation, for his defense of his family, and his stellar record. In the tradition of every Supreme Court, I hope he will be treated with respect and grace by his colleagues. I’m counting on their rising above all the chaos and welcoming him into the fold.

I hope so too, but I have a sneaking suspicion it’s not going to happen.  Thomas has been pretty much left left alone since his confirmation, but I can’t see the same happening to Kavanaugh.

Watch for more public statements from Ginsburg, Sotomayor, and Kagan . . .

I’m just as concerned with how they treat him when they are together as with what they say publicly. They could be sweetness and light in public and unkind when together. I keep remembering how Ginsberg and Scalia got along. And Kagan knows Kavanaugh. Let’s hope.

    And Kagan knows Kavanaugh.

She made some kind of statement against Kavanaugh being on the court because he wouldn’t be a swing vote like Kennedy was.

Yes, Scalia and Ginsburg had an unusual relationship.  Now that her friend is gone, it wouldn’t surprise me if she gets more bitter . . .

It won’t matter too much. Probably 2 out of 3 will be gone before Trump is finished with his presidency.

True. But was that “against Kavanaugh” or a simple statement of likely fact? At least she didn’t attack him for being a gang rapist.

Thank goodness.  She probably knew the allegations were total fabrications . . .

I also remember the nastiness focused on Samuel Alito during his confirmation, to the point where it was suggested by liberals that he was a racist.  Lindsey Graham softly asked Alito if he was a racist, and Mrs. Alito began to cry.

Sam Alito will be there for his fellow conservatives.

From your lips to God’s mouth.

Sotomayor and Kagan have put on weight as has Thomas, and of course Scalia before he died.

That is reassuring, @garyrobbins, but it’s so sad that anyone might have to be there for anyone else–on the Supreme Court, no less!

It amuses/disturbs me that (as far as I can tell) no Democrat has criticized Kavanaugh for his positions/rulings when it comes to the limits of executive power.

It’s amusing because it shows how much their opposition to the guy is about partisan politics and not about policy.

It’s disturbing because it shows just how little they care about the limits of executive power.

It’s easier to be nice when you have the upper hand. Now that the court is (hopefully) 5/4 conservative, RBG, Kagan et al may not be so polite. We shall see.

I seem to remember, @misthiocracy, that they were worried that Kavanaugh would not take action regarding Trump if he overstepped. For example, Trump’s bragging that he could pardon himself was a concern they had (and to me was so silly). Am I not remembering correctly?

I recall such rumblings as well, but I don’t remember if it ever came from Democrats in the Senate/Congress, or if it only came from the usual gaggle of media proxies.  Furthermore, it reinforces the partisan nature of the complaint since they kept their “worries” to how Trump would behave, rather than how Kavanaugh’s opinions might embolden increases in executive power in general.

Could be a good OP on Kavanaugh and his projected effect on SCOTUS treatment of executive power, or the administrative state.

Kagan pinched Kavanaugh playfully during arguments. I don’t think she would do that if she’s planning to carry bitterness forward.

@janbear, I can’t tell you how happy I am to hear that news and to read the article! Please let the Supreme Court be one place where people respect and like each other! Thanks so much!

Impeach Kagan!  We can’t have a justice who physically assaults other judges!
