Trump: The ’60 Minutes’ Interview

President Trump sat down for a long, interesting interview Sunday with Lesley Stahl of “60 Minutes.” He talked about Hurricane Michael, the suspected murder of a Saudi journalist, China, Russia, the economy, and the issue of “fake news.”

The video is below the fold (warning: the video autoplays). Whether you watched it last night or just now, how do you think he did?

I don’t get sound.  Is it me or the clip?

I got the sound. For a small ransom I will return it.

Look, I never liked President Trump. But has Lesley Stahl has heard of the little trait called “courtesy”? Why did she have to constantly interrupt him? She has done this her whole life as a reporter, constantly insinuation herself into the subjects she’s covered. Who cares what she thinks?

Trump should have said, “Listen, Lesley, I am not going to debate you. Your role is to interview me. If you continue to try to debate me, we are through.”

He is always taking the bait. Frankly, she got the better of him on that butcher of North Korea. But, as I said, debating him is not her role. He is the president, and a little respect was called for.

“below the fold”?  Won’t that damage my computer monitor if I fold it?

    Stream of consciousness:

Did he require that someone older than him was the interviewer? After 44 years of broadcast journalism why hasn’t she learned to emphasize the appropriate words in sentences?

As for Greenland, according to the National Snow & Ice Data Center:

The net change in mass of the ice sheet overall, including this higher discharge of ice directly into the ocean, is not clear at this point but may be a smaller loss or even a small gain. This is similar to our assessment for 2017, and in sharp contrast to the conditions for the preceding decade.

“Let it be whatever it takes to get the job done.” A sentiment totally at odds with the politics of ‘feels’ and therefore the sensibilities of journalists.

Yeah, yeah, you gave offensive arms to Ukraine instead of giving Crimea to Russia. But why can’t you call Putin a poopyhead at a press conference?

I liked his performance more than I thought I would. (But I had very, very low expectations.)

Since I didn’t watch it last night, I had to go to the CBS web site to watch it as I couldn’t make your video work. That said, I watched the entire thing, thinking I would cringe at some of his answers but was pleasantly surprised at the confidence he showed. Leslie Stahl even said he showed that he is very comfortable being president. At last he’s becoming a politician and wouldn’t let her back him into any corners. His answer to her asking him to “pledge” that he wouldn’t fire Mueller was particularly good. While he said he had no plans to fire the  man, he also very rightly said, “Why would I pledge to you?” I also liked the  part where he said, “I’m the president and you’re not.”

60 minutes should always be avoided.  Our rule was if they call don’t answer.   We’ve  got decades of dishonest ambushes and creative editing to inform us about them.

The measure of success is how few breathless (distorted) articles have been written today on what he said.  The Mattis comment even seemed kind of light hearted, although I’d beg to differ with the President as to whether the Secretary is a Democrat.  Or maybe he once was a Democrat  back when Scoop Jackson was a Democrat.
