The Conservative Case for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
On June 26, community organizer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 28, conquered an aging, white, establishment Democrat for the nomination to represent a 49.8% Hispanic congressional district in New York (…this must be important because it’s New York). Consequently, Democratic Socialist National Committee Chairman Tom Perez declared Ocasio-Cortez “the future of our party.”
Well, my daughters — I have three kids, two of whom are daughters. One just graduated college, one who is in college, and they were both texting me about their excitement over Alexandria because she really — she represents the future of our party. She ran a spirited campaign.
Why are conservatives mocking this? It’s his party, isn’t it? While Republicans debate whether to welcome remnant Democrats as refugees or demand unconditional surrender, the Democrats of the Future are inciting a revolution! under the banner of social democracy.
Let’s face it: the arc of history is on her side. Trump has poisoned the Republican brand, so the contest will be among the Democrat factions. The Hillary wing is too corrupt and the Obama wing is too conservative. After all, Obama failed to nationalize the auto industry despite his early efforts; and his conservative lazy fair economic policies led to today’s capitalist boom, exacerbated by Trump giving all of the government profit back to big business. America needs a more efficient government. Venezuela knows how to nationalize industries while remaining friendly to small businesses, enabling them to raise prices for their goods. In America, because Trump is deporting all the workers, employers are unable to fill their job openings. That’s inefficient. Keeping everyone employed and earning a living wage was never a problem in the socialist land where Bernie honeymooned; and just two months ago President Maduro raised Venezuelans’ minimum monthly salary to an amount that wouldn’t have been possible before the foreign capitalist devils were chased away.
The youthful Ocasio-Cortez comprehends the true meaning of social democracy and rejects old white people’s attempts to denigrate it. She’s not hung up on the 20th century, a time before socialism had worked out the details of omelet-making. She truly deserves to be showered with attention as a thought leader of the Democrat Party.

I think Republicans shouldn’t be so quick to mock the Dems for their lurch to the left. The new Social Democrats among them will have a popular and populist message to bring to Americans. The electorate isn’t moved by ideology or reason if it were we wouldn’t be in the mess we are in now over all. Republicans took a radical and populist step away from centrism (widely mocked as establishment globalism) and it did not hurt them politically. Why should the same not be true for the Dems. We laugh that their leadership is old and low energy and now we see it being replaced by the young and energetic. Half of life is showing up. This woman did that and that is why she won while her incumbent opponent didn’t show up and so he lost. Trump won by narrow margins, a younger more radical Democratic candidate will remember to show up to Wisconsin this time and that is all they may really need to do to win it.
Everyone though the Republicans being rolled over by Tea Party unrest was going to implode them and look at them now?
Also I would like to point to a bit of history. The last time there was general economic apprehension during the great economic shift from farm to factory the public settled on the welfare state as the solution to those worries. You think this time when we are moving from manufacturing to service we will not expand the social welfare state?
I was thinking about that yesterday. You can make a case that the Obama-era loss of roughly a thousand Democrat legislative seats nationally cleared out the “mainstream”(ish) democrats, and left an opening for more radical leftists to move in and take over the party.
He doesn’t write so well, but he carefully crafts his prose to readers of the highest
blood alcohol contentsophistication.I got to use that line on my five year old a few weeks ago. She stopped cold, got a serious look on her face, and I could see the gears turning for a couple seconds while she processed the possibility of me being correct. Then she asked me if it’s true. Sure is.
You could argue that.It certainly wiped out the blue dogs. Of course now many of those seats belong to Republicans that are not all that keen on embracing the new populist agenda because it doesn’t match their district all that well. We have seen some new moderate Democrats move in on them, like that one PA district. I think what it did was just narrow the numbers of transitional leaders in the Democratic party. Many of their top people now were their top people under Bush 43. Obama didn’t create a new base of leadership his age. But now many who grew up with him are becoming active and threatening to push out the old guys/gals. Invariably with time they will because age will just drive the old leadership away, it has too.
We should start calling her Cortez the Killer.
