Résumé Enhancements for Democrat Women Candidates

Hat tip to Rush Limbaugh for the phrase “résumé enhancement.” The Wall Street Journal did an article last week (no link, behind paywall) on the many women running for Congress around the country. Here are some of the attributes and actions the Democrats used to further their campaigns.

Erin Collier, running in Upstate New York, stated in her March campaign announcement that “I’m not going to let those boys beat me.”

Kelda Roys in Wisconsin and Krish Vignarajah in Maryland posted pictures of themselves breastfeeding their babies.

Illinois House candidate Sol Flores described being sexually assaulted as a child.

Amy McGrath from Kentucky launched her House campaign describing how the the US Marines told her she could not become a combat fighter pilot.

I do not understand how any of those stories could contribute to a woman’s fitness for serving in the US Congress. I guess the status of “victim” is the main résumé enhancement for Democrat women.

I think that is the first item in any Democrat’s resume.

It will be interesting to see how well it works this fall. Too bad the GOP Congress gave them so much to work with in the Omnibus bill.

Have you ever heard of the radio (then TV) show “Queen for a Day?” The woman whose plight scored the highest with the studio audience on the “applause meter” got a washing machine.

It isn’t so much the tale of woe as it is rising up from whatever the circumstances were and Sticking it to the Man.

So “the Man” didn’t like washing machines?  I do remember Queen for a Day, and I always thought it was about the tale of woe.  Although, in fairness, I never actually watched it.  However, I can tell you that if you want to get on the news on one of my local stations, find a camera, step in front of it, and start crying.

I think their main resume enhancement this November will be not being a Republican.  Being part of the Trump party is a massive detriment.

We may find out. The Congress is usually elected on local issues but the Democrats will certainly nationalize this election. Whether it will help them is another matter.

I have no doubt that the Republicans will lose at least the House, and probably the Senate.  Of course, it’s not like the Republicans were doing anything with them anyway.

Ironically, I think the Dem’s taking over and going full left-wing nutjob/impeachment is probably Trumps best hope for a second term.

I know that’s the legend Trump people tell themselves to rationalize inconvenient data, but it doesn’t match reality.

With the exception of the sexual assault victim, what these candidates are advertising doesn’t sound like victimhood to me, though it may be irrelevant to their qualifications for office.

Breastfeeding, for example, is not typically thought of as victimhood. It’s not a qualification for office, certainly. But I imagine its use in PR is to project a wholesome, everywoman image. Much like candidates using photos of themselves engaged in other “regular people” activities:

“Look at me, I’m not a lizard-person. See, I have photos of me not being a lizard-person. For example, lactation is something lizard-people cannot do. But I do it, because I’m a regular-people person, goshdarnit, not a lizard-person!”

Breastfeeding an infant doesn’t represent victimhood, but what does it have to do with being a good congresswoman?  I breastfeed so I can represent mothers?  Men don’t breastfeed, so they can’t represent mothers?

Hey Fred.  Could you write a post and state your case?  I’d like to know exactly what you think and why.  As for me, my largest issue is the signing of the latest budget bill.  I want to see Ryan and the Republicans repudiated for putting forth such a travesty of a bill so late in the process.  I am very upset about that, but no so upset that I would vote for a Leftist.  I think Trump’s mobilization at the border is a brilliant move, a daring move.  The threat of tariffs has thus far served as a warning, which is no bad thing.  So yes, the Republicans may have lost support and enthusiasm, but not because of Trump.  They earned this all by themselves.  If anything, Trump may save them by drumming up support.

The only people motivated by the Hate Trump left are the Hate Trump Left.  It remains to be seen whether or not they will be sufficiently motivated to outpace the less than enthusiastic Republican support.  I think it may be a near run thing.

What does wiener-biting have to do with being a good officeholder, either? And yet it’s pretty common for candidates to let themselves be seen and photographed biting wieners, burgers, or other local delicacies, in order to burnish their wholesome, regular-people bona fides.

Candidates aren’t just potential officeholders. They’re also politicians, and political popularity isn’t solely determined by qualifications for office. We might not trust politicians’ PR, schmoozing, and glad-handing, but presumably they do it because it’s relevant to getting elected, even when it’s not relevant to the job they’re being elected for.

Maybe the GOP should look into the mirror if it gets trounced in November.

I think we have to assume that the breastfeeding photos are meant in the context of the supposed right of women to openly, publicly breastfeed their children. If that assumption is correct, then it relates to an issue in which many women are allegedly victims.

I thought this was going to be about candidates “shouting their abortions” as a qualification. [eye roll emoji]
