Meryl Streep: Moral Coward

In a puff piece promoting their new film, the New York Times interviewed screen legends Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep. Since the latter has spent most of her career pushing progressive politics and positively gushing about disgraced movie exec Harvey Weinstein, the interviewer (shown in bold type) asked why she’s been so quiet about the #MeToo movement.

I’ve got to shift conversation to the news these days, sexual harassment. One thing that struck me after the  accusations broke was people were saying, “What is Meryl going to say?” They were waiting for you.

STREEP I know. I found out about this on a Friday and went home deep into my own life. And then somebody told me that on “Morning Joe” they were screaming that I haven’t responded yet. I don’t have a Twitter thing or – handle, whatever. And I don’t have Facebook. I really had to think. Because it really underlined my own sense of cluelessness, and also how evil, deeply evil, and duplicitous, a person he was, yet such a champion of really great work.

You make movies. You think you know everything about everybody. So much gossip. You don’t know anything. People are so inscrutable on a certain level. And it’s a shock. Some of my favorite people have been brought down by this, and he’s not one of them.

What do you make of the fact, though, that people are waiting for you to speak?

STREEP I don’t want to hear about the silence of me. I want to hear about the silence of Melania Trump. I want to hear from her. She has so much that’s valuable to say. And so does Ivanka. I want her to speak now.

How convenient. Just like when Weinstein took a leave of absence to fight the NRA.

If memory serves, Melania Trump didn’t praise Harvey Weinstein from the Academy Awards stage. Ivanka Trump wasn’t harassed by the plant-molesting mogul and blacklisted when she ran away.

Instead, it was Meryl Streep who used her 2012 Globe speech to thank “God – Harvey Weinstein.” It was Streep who claimed she knew nothing, nothing! about her close collaborator while the rest of Hollywood talked about it endlessly.

When pressed about the scandal in October, Streep claimed, “I didn’t know about these other offenses; I did not know about his financial settlements with actresses and colleagues; I did not know about his having meetings in his hotel room, his bathroom or other inappropriate, coercive acts. And if everybody knew, I don’t believe that all the investigative reporters in the entertainment and the hard news media would have neglected for decades to write about it.”

Why would the press fear multimillion-dollar lawsuits and repeated threats of blocking access to a wide array of movie stars? The answer is all too obvious.

The fact is that Streep is a moral coward and a hypocrite. She knew. She just placed her paycheck above the safety and careers of other actresses.

That is just bizarre.  Why on Earth would either of the Trump ladies have any special knowledge about Harvey Weinstein’s behavior?  It’s like when Captain Kirk asks the rogue probe a question it cannot answer and it just mentally runs in circles.

Maybe Meryl is one of Harvey’s silent victims.

Or, what if she has skeletons in her closet, and Harvey has the key to the closet?

As far as the Trump ladies, I interpreted that to read that Streep believes Melania and Ivanka have the keys to Donald Trump’s skeleton closet.

Meryl Streep is neither Harvey Weinstein’s wife, nor his daughter.

The promotional interviews from “The Post” have brought up some real interesting questions (possibly far more interesting than anything that happens in the movie) Like why Ellsberg a hero and Snowden a traitor?

I think the media’s reasoning is that one leaked important secret documents to embarrass a Republican President, and the Other leaked on a democrat administration.

I think the better reason, is one stayed, lost his job, got arrested – endured a trail, he paid the price of his actions. Snowden skipped town to evade the consequences of his actions. Heroes face the consequences of their actions.

I also didnt realize that the “Pentagon Papers” scandal led the white house to create the plumbers, which then resulted in the Watergate scandal.

I also didnt realize that Morton Halperin – of Nixon’s national security console, who leaked the secret bombing campaign in Cambodia, is Mark Halperin’s dad. Id say small world – but its the swamp.

I get so sick of looking at that woman’s smug face. It’s very telling that she deflects her moral burden onto Melania and Ivanka, after placing that same moral burden on other women for decades. She is a disgusting human being.

Remember, when Weinstein was caught his first instinct was to say “I’m sorry;  let’s fight the NRA.” and Kevin Spacey said “I don’t remember;  but now I’m coming out as gay.”  It’s the devil’s bargain struck by all progressives:  Turn a blind eye as long as I support the right causes.  But, it didn’t work for Weinstein or Spacey, and I’m guessing it won’t work for Streep either.  Not that I’ve given this matter a moment’s thought, because I couldn’t care less about Meryl Streep, but this bizarre statement tells me for sure that she knew about Weinstein and said nothing.

It’s also why Trump has been able to skate above all this.  With Progressives, whether in politics, media, or entertainment it’s their acts + their hypocrisy that’s taken them down.  Same with Republicans on sexual matters – strong anti-abortionist who urge their mistresses to get abortions, or anti-gay campaigners arrested for gay solicitation.  It’s different with Trump.  If you read (as I did) the NY tabloids in the 80s or 90s or listened to any of Trump’s many appearances on the Howard Stern show you already knew he was gross and crude when it came to women.  With Trump it was already out there.  It was a known part of the package.  The tape that surfaced during the election campaign was no surprise to any of us.  He’s simply in a different category than most of the other folks caught up in this.

And, let’s not forget that feminists should be effusively thanking Donald Trump for getting elected.  If Hillary won do you think any of the revelations about the male Progressive establishment would have occurred?

    Re comment # 6

When Meryl Streep defended Roman Polanski years ago, did we say through our actions, “Okay, Meryl. Hope you enjoyed your short career. It ends now.” ? No.

I’m sixty one years old. Don’t ask me what was wrong with us back in the 1970’s. But after Streep defended Polanski—a defense that amounted to no more than that she thought Polanski should get a pass for drugging and raping a child because condemnation and punishment would be so damaging to anyone so very talented and sensitive that it would prevent him from continuing to produce artistically great films (God help us, we actually pondered this.We really were smoking a lot of pot in those days.)—we tried to be or, at least, sound less judgmental when talking about him.

So it’s our fault she was still around later to enable Weinstein—to frighten and dishearten, with her really craven praise of him, young women who wanted to speak out. And it’s our fault we still have the self serving, pretentious old goose to look at now.

Better late than never. I won’t go to a new movie in which she has a role. I won’t buy or rent her old movies.

How dare you call Ms. Streep a moral coward when she so boldly spoke out about the sexism, racism, and anti-Semitism of dead Walt Disney when she was campaigning for an Oscar nomination against Emma Thompson (for Saving Mr. Banks).

I always thought this spoke very poorly of Obama’s management abilities (and character) that nobody would deliver anything but the most cheerful of polls, reports and accounts. Like Adolf in the bunker directing long depleted divisions and long dead generals into action – because nobody on his staff dared deliver bad news.

I just imagined Obama flying off the handle in the oval office – in much the same way Hitler does in that viral video meme.

So here is the promotional text for this new film:

…The Washington Post’s Katharine Graham (Streep), the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, and editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks), as they race to catch up with The New York Times to expose a massive cover-up of government secrets that spanned three decades and four U.S. Presidents. The two must overcome their differences as they risk their careers – and their very freedom – to help bring long-buried truths to light.

    This is Streep:

I’m not quite certain what to call this. Irony? Hypocrisy? Neither seem to quite capture the sheer bravado of this load of manure.

I don’t know a thing about it but I think we can count on it making Republicans look good and Democrats look bad.  The old “bash the Republicans” theme has been done before and we know Hollywood likes to be original.  Right?

Thanks for the link on the Pentagon Papers. I was playing with dolls in those years.

At the time of Ellsburg and Russo’s prosecution, Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart wrote in regards to the suit to suppress the leak:

“In the absence of the governmental checks and balances present in other areas of our national life, the only effective restraint upon executive policy and power in the areas of national defense and international affairs may lie in an enlightened citizenry—in an informed and critical public opinion which alone can here protect the values of democratic government.”

I have to wonder about an informed citizenry, and exactly what that means in 2018, considering where the citizenry gets their “history” from.

Hopefully not from Hollywood films. We’ll see.

    This is dumb.

First of all, who cares? I often like Streep as an actress but have no interest in anything she says or does or knows when out-of-character. Conservative obsession with leftist celebrities and their smug hypocrisies is getting tired.

Second, all of this “Who knew? And when did they know?” garbage is gross. We shouldn’t play that game, which belongs to two-bit authoritarians and their hate mobs. It’s an attempt to slime someone by association. Streep needn’t answer any of those questions.

Third, I have lots of close friends who could be up to all kinds of mischief, and I would have no idea about it. With work colleagues, I’m even less likely to know about it. Do we want to live in a country in which everyone feels obligated to conduct moral investigations of anyone with whom they come into contact? I certainly don’t.

I’m sorry but Meryl Streep is just not an attractive woman. Sure, she’s OK looking but not hot, cute, sexy or anything worth risking her box office revenue over cheap sex for. I’m not trying to be crass but maybe Weinstein just doesn’t find her attractive and she’s angry at that.
