This week’s podcast starts with me asking James what movies he’d like to be defined by — what he loves, what he admires, what he wants the kids to see, and how the movies affected him growing up. It’s Casablanca, Star Trek, Aliens, and Radio Days — and it’s a fun conversation. Join us, enjoy, and please share!

I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to see Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, such was my disappointment with The Motion Picture. It was practically the same plot as for the TOS episode “The Changeling.” Too much talk. Too much “ooh-ahh” over the special effects. I figured the next installment would be no better. That was the movie that took me back to the wonder of the original series.

Last March, my in-laws had all of us (me, husband, six children) visiting them. My father-in-law insisted that we all watch Casablanca.

The year before, he had us watch a silly Fred Astaire movie, Shall We Dance.

When Papa Toad and I first got engaged, his father and I discovered that we had a lot in common, including our love of The Last of the Mohicans. My father-in-law is so great…

Re the bonds of affection and sharing a movie experience: A college friend saw the movie What About Bob with two other friends. They did not think it was funny at all. Disappointed to hear that, I told my friend that, much as I loved the other two, she would never think it was funny while watching it with them, but if she watched it again with me, I assured her it would be riotous. We watched it together — no drugs or alcohol involved — it was much much funnier.

I see what you mean. I hadn’t considered the effect disappointment might have, but yeah, it’s not a movie to recommend.
