Contributor Post Created with Sketch. Why the “Crusade” Against the Holy Cross Mascot?

The “Crusader” mascot at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, is under fire. I wrote about it for the Boston Herald today and discussed it on the podcast.

Much of the attention has been on the “Muslim” angle–the statement from the college that they are concerned that a Christian warrior mascot might offend a Muslim. But there isn’t a single report of an actual offended Muslim lodging an actual complaint. In other words, the problem isn’t an oversensitive Islamist, it’s the paranoid P.C. police. They’re imagining a potential offense, however irrational, and working backwards from there.

Which is a shame, because “Crusader” is a great sports mascot for Holy Cross. It’s a symbol linked to combat or struggle that is also relevant to the institution it represents. UMass has one of those, too (The Minutemen), as do UVA (the Cavaliers) and Notre Dame (the fighting Irish).

The lamest mascots are the ones that are clearly the product of a marketing committee–abstract ideas or irrelevant symbols that have no power or impact: The Minnesota Wild, the Atlanta Dream, the Savannah Bananas. (Yes, seriously: the Bananas.)

The problem is that as P.C. stupidity expands unchecked, we’re going to have fewer Crusaders and Braves and Mountaineers, and more “Sky” and “Heat” and “Isotopes.”

Maybe I’m spoiled because I’m a lifelong fan of the college sports team with the best mascot EVAH!

That’s right: the fighting Gamecocks of South Carolina! #GoCocks!

It’s a great mascot because the name comes from a local Revolutionary War hero, Gen. Thomas Sumter; it’s an animal that loves to fight, and did a lot of it in South Carolina until the practice was banned; and is easy to adapt to any sporting situation.

If there’s a better mascot in the world of sports, I’d love to hear about it!

The Houston Texans. “Houston Roughnecks” was inexplicably missing on the ballot.

As for the Crusades, offense makes about as much sense as Che Guevara T-shirts.

Jews who know their history (and their prayerbooks, which memorialize much of it) could conceivably have a legitimate grievance against a Crusader mascot, given the extensive slaughter in the Rhineland and other communities along the route to Jerusalem.

Heck, by that standard, so could plenty of Eastern Orthodox Christians.

I’m not personally aware of any such mascot-specific grievances being raised by any Jewish communal institution, and I suspect that Eastern Orthodox communities haven’t seen fit to seek any kind of redress either.

And funnily enough, come to think of it, I’m not personally aware of any avowedly “Justice”-devoted organization (if I may be permitted to use a different label for the PC Police) attempting to, ahem, crusade on either of our communities’ behalf in protest at the milli-aggression in question. (Since both the Jewish and Eastern Orthodox communities weren’t armed and organized to #Resist at the time they were slaughtered — unlike the Mahometans — I classify the offense theoretically caused by the mascot at a larger size or level than micro, hence milli-aggression.)

As an aside: It might be interesting if Holy Cross reserved current mascot activity solely for when the team is on offense, and additionally introduced a mascot specifically and only active when the team is on defense — my idea is for this mascot to be an oversized person (gender TBD?) who represents the effort to shut down abortion clinics, and who accordingly leads the crowd in cheers of “Shut them down! Shut them down!”

As with most PC kerfuffles, this one revolves completely around the (perceived) sensitivities of a “victim” without considering whether there’s anything reasonable at all about the alleged offense.

Way, way back when, I recall attending Boston College-Holy Cross football games–then an annual tradition and a big deal (the famous Coconut Grove fire in Boston has the game as a backstory). I’m pretty sure that HC had a real guy dressed as a real crusader on a real horse, to which Boston College fans would respond by chanting–to the tune “Oh Tannenbaum”–“Oh Holy Cross, Oh Holy Cross, all they eat is apple sauce.” Those, needless to say, were more polite times.

“Heat” is a slang term for the police. Frankly Michael, even thinking that such a mascot is acceptable just shows how privileged and racist you are. You should be shot, quartered, lit on fire and your ashes should be dissolved in acid.

Is there a catchier way to call the team Self-Loathing Genderqueer Dhimmi Poseurs? (Some faculty somewhere in the US may have already copyrighted that.)

Have the Muslims discarded the use of jihad and jihadists as indicating struggles against religious political opponents? Why must the PC crowd act so one-sided?

Imagine the hilarity that would fill the sportscaster’s booth if the Cocks met the Beavers (Oregon State).
