Brooklyn College Tries to Ban NYPD Officers from Campus
Just when I think I can’t be any more disgusted with college students’ hand-wringing, Brooklyn College is telling police officers that their presence on campus is upsetting for students:
Brooklyn College in New York City has directed police officers who need a bathroom break to use the broken-down facilities in a building on the far edge of campus. With a petition in the works to ban cops from the taxpayer-funded campus, the school’s director of public safety, Donald Wenz, told the student newspaper The Excelsior that he is pushing to keep law enforcement out of sight, the New York Post reported Sunday night.
Please note that the director of public safety made this statement.
To minimize student exposure to police presence, officers have been told that the college “prefers” they use bathroom facilities in the West End Building of the campus. A junior described the bathroom, which is located at the far end of the campus, in this way:
“The bathroom is horrendous,” Abe said. “You can only wash your hands in one of the sinks because the other two are broken.” The newspaper representative from the Post found “a broken toilet with a stained seat and an out of order sign taped to the door of the stall. The newspaper staff also found a lack of soap and paper towels.” Another student stated that students “. . . don’t feel comfortable around cops. They just don’t. It makes safe spaces feel not so safe.”
A student petition is also being circulated to support banning the police from the campus.
An NYPD sergeant/union chief made this suggestion: “Maybe it’s time these students, who fail to recognize the value of those protecting them, go take classes abroad—where they can have their bathrooms all to themselves,” he said.
The actions and statements by the college administrators and students are despicable. Let’s see if the petition banning the police from the campus is approved. When a crisis happens on campus, who do you think the administrators will call?

Eventually anti-cop forces will prevail in NYC and the murder rate will explode, just like it has in Chicago and Baltimore.
In Georgia, I don’t think the University would have the power to do this to any law enforcement.
What sort of nut case does not want police around in a public space? It is funny. Rich places pay for police protection for events all the time. No security guard from a company is going to be as good as law enforcement onsite. (in a civillian setting).
It did occur to me, Bryan, that they may not be able to do this legally. That’s my hope, although they don’t deserve to rescued from their stupidity!
I hope you’re wrong, but as long as the Progressives are in power, who knows? It really is a scary thought. Thanks, BD1.
No, BD1 is right. NYC is already on the slide to the pre-Guiliani days. I guess it was nice while it lasted. I remember NYC from when I was a kid in the 80’s is was a crime, and drug infested dump and it’s on its way back there. My brother in law is in the NYPD and has 5 more years until he can retire. He wants to do his 20 and get out and I suspect a lot of these guys will do the same. I don’t know why anyone would want to be a cop these days.
Police free zone?
Can you say hunting season, perves and thieves?

This school’s intercollegiate athletics team name was The Bridges until somebody woke up and changed it a few years ago. Any school with a bridge for a mascot is capable of anything.
I don’t know, either, Mate De. I am so grateful for men like your brother-in-law who put their lives on the line every day. And then this nonsense is their reward. We have made it impossible for cops to be cops. It makes me nuts.
I don’t which is worse–their name or UC Irvine’s–The Anteaters. Really?
BTW, the school mascot is the Bulldog. But also two of their graduates were Bernie Sanders and Barbara Boxer. Sometimes you just can’t dig yourself out of a hole.
These kids have been ‘carefully taught’ to fear the police by their parents, teachers and other authority figures all their lives. No wonder they feel uncomfortable. That might be better than feeling assaulted when no police are available to respond though. I hope cooler heads prevail for their sakes.
The bulldog replaced the bridge. I omitted that fact because there is only one true Bulldog (pictured). I wonder if they ever had a student walking around in a costume with a big bridge for a head?
Yeah, that’ll all be great until some whackjob shows up with a gun or 2, or 5, pissed off at both his boyfriend and girlfriend for infidelity and having recently failed his test on the socio-political ramifications of transgenderism on medieval art and starts killing everyone. “The cops are never here when you need one….” – that’ll be next.
Now that was a LOL!!!!
At a college like this one, I could imagine someone just as you describe him . . . or, er, her…
don’t forget xer.
Neither public or private colleges are a sanctuary for criminal activity. Every drug dealer in the area around this campus will promptly start selling drugs on campus, and student users will believe that they can buy on campus. I can think of no other reason to keep a police officer off a campus.
Well maybe there is another reason. There might be some students that have never heard the word no. Perhaps the administration is trying to save students thousands of dollars in therapy whose psyche’s have been shattered when they were told they are not allowed to do something. They can watch Dr. Phil if they need help.
Most police officers will not enter a college campus unless they receive a call for service. Campus public safety officers are not trained to conduct criminal investigations, remember Penn State. Penn State tried to keep the Sandusky child abuse case in house, rather than having the State Police investigate the allegations. That did not work out well for Penn State.
Every day I read a blog from the Bangor, Maine, police force. They do good work to help people in community every single day. These officers are truly the best of us.
Once again, the left is teaching hate and prejudice.
I do understand that the police would not be there unless they are called in. But to refuse to let them use the restrooms, or allow them only to use the most inconvenient, filthiest one is offensive (in more ways than one). Not only are the students incredibly naïve, Doug, but the administrators have no idea what they are in for. And when a crime wave is called around or on the campus, they will still try to blame law enforcement. As if we haven’t abused and tied the hands of cops enough. The whole situation is terrible. But I don’t need to tell you that.
UC Santa Cruz: the Banana Slugs
Voted on by the student body in the 70s. They grow a lot of pot around Santa Cruz.
Wonder if any of these snowflakes have considered how many mass-shootings have occurred on college campuses, and who they’re going to call if someone decides their school would make a good target range.
Totally agree, most sane individuals that that have a business love to have a police officer come by. It really should be no different for a college. You would think that this school would want the community to know that police officers are welcome on campus, and may be there at any time.
No kidding. I know the police would respond, but would you want to walk into that situation when the people there hate you or are disgusted by what you stand for? You can be sure they’ll want the best protection even after they’ve denigrated their rescuers. My heart goes out to the cops in NY. I wonder how cops on the Left feel (since it is NY, after all).
Seriously? Banana Slugs? Good grief. I’m so I don’t live in CA anymore!
The first brutal rape on campus will bring calls for the cops to re-establish their presence.
“NYPD sergeant-union chief made this suggestion: “Maybe it’s time these students, who fail to recognize the value of those protecting them, go take classes abroad—where they can have their bathrooms all to themselves,” he said.”
I’m not a big fan of unions, but maybe this union chief can knock some sense into the administration. Surely liberal parents don’t want their daughters at risk . .
Ghostbusters!
The police department should offer, in writing, to stay off campus for 1 year. If the college president signs it, the police do not set foot on that campus for any reason, for a full year. The police should make public announcements, showing their eagerness to bow to the wishes of their betters in academia – make sure that everyone knows that there is no police presence there whatsoever for the next year.
Then just see what happens.
I understand how your brother-in-law feels. I received an education on the streets that no college could give me as a police officer. I didn’t have the time to go out of my way to violate a persons constitutional rights. I spent most of my time arresting people that were violating your constitutional rights. Like taking your purse, breaking into your your home, or car,…etc.
I sorta like Banana Slugs.
Hey – I’m an alum of UC Irvine, and I rather like the Anteaters – named after Peter the Anteater of the BC comic. However in recent years they have distinguished themselves with a particularly high level of stupidity (refusing to allow the US flag to be displayed, disrespecting conservative and/or pro-Israel viewpoints, etc.). When I was on student government in the late 1970’s, I got along rather well with my far-left counterpart, as we were both working against the mushy middle that wanted to exclude viewpoints that weren’t mushy middle.
As @dnewlander pointed out in Comment #20, UC Irvine Anteaters are better than UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs.
Rensselaer Polytechnic in Troy, NY (near Albany) is The Engineers (now isn’t that a terrifying moniker!). University of Rochester is the Yellow Jackets (a bee variant).
