Recommended by Ricochet Members Created with Sketch. On Seven Years at Ricochet

Ricochet is productivity and procrastination, accomplishment and distraction, enrichment and inertia.

I know this well because this week marks my seventh year in this community. I came here after @jameslileks linked to his Ricochet article and described how paying for the privilege of commenting kept discourse civil and productive. I joined soon after, and don’t spend much time on other political/ cultural discussion sites.

Seven years here means I’ve devoted a significant portion of my life to reading, commenting, and writing posts at Ricochet. It is not always a healthy hobby, as I often spend too much time here when I ought to be dabbling more in my offline world. But the steady provision of member posts is like having a smart, thoughtful magazine to read, and there I’ve simply exchanged paper magazines for digital (well, “simply” is probably not the right word, as I spend more time on Ricochet than I would reading smart magazines). Commenting and interacting with the community adds another rich layer, with the bonus of making new friends. And then I can post my own writing, too, for a built-in audience. That is amazing.

Imagine trying to share your writing in the pre-Internet days. You would be labeled “eccentric” if you tried to pass around pieces of paper to friends and family asking them to read your essay and tell you what they thought. Most would throw it away. Publication was unwieldy. You could go for traditional publishing, which could take decades to accomplish. You could self-publish, and pay for it. Self-publishing looked cheap and unappealing. Someone determined and creative might print up a personal periodical and leave it in coffee shops or something, but I don’t ever remember seeing that. And getting feedback from readers would be slow, let alone having a discussion to clarify your thinking.

Later, we had blogs. I remember Hugh Hewitt talking about them, and I didn’t know what they were. Then I had a couple of my own online journals, and I read others’ blogs. I had “friends” in my “blog circle” and a kind little audience that consisted mainly of mom, sister, and colleagues. It was exciting to spot any new readers that had visited. Blogging could be satisfying, but when Facebook came along, it crushed the dynamic. I was never sure what to do with it. What was I supposed to say in just three or four lines? To whom was I writing? I was no longer sure who my audience was, so I was speaking more into a void. And then I felt oddly embarrassed when I did link to a blog post or write a longer update. Did I seem smug? Condescending? Were these links annoying? Plus, I wasn’t sure all these people caught up on Facebook were even interested in reading blogs anymore.

Then came Ricochet, and I could speak freely about the subjects I loved: books, childhood memories, my solutions to world problems, education, reading to children, the stray political opinion, and more. Before the Internet, when I wanted to write, I would stare at a blank document and finally come up with a lot of cringe-worthy twaddle. But now I hit “Start a Conversation,” and the words flow. I can meaningfully write about growing up without wanting to crumple and toss the piece when I reread it later. I am encouraged by the subsequent feedback and exchanges with the readers.

To me, Ricochet is far better than a personal blog, because the readers are already there, and they, in turn, provide a steady stream of interesting content. When I post on Ricochet, it’s as if I’m talking to people who are right in the room, and I don’t need to go out and find and assemble the audience. It’s a tough audience, that has forced me to discipline my writing. When I hit “Publish,” I’m far from finished. I might spend another hour making sure my facts are correct and simplifying an awkward sentence or two. I also tend to repeat words and phrases, use the same sentence patterns, or use too many words. I don’t want to feel stupid in front of informed readers, so I have to be extra conscientious.

Reality calls now, and it’s back to work, but I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to the friends, readers, and writers who energize this community and make it a satisfying experience and worthwhile hobby.

Sawatdeeka, this is such an insightful description of why a fine writer like yourself might find Ricochet so appealing. Ricochet ought to use parts of your post as an advertisement.

I’ve been a Ricocheter for just a couple of months. It’s been fun trying to come up with interesting posts.

I was a freeloading “lurker” for a year or two. I should have joined earlier.

No, thank you! I wrote a post last year on my sixth anniversary (seventh is coming up next month), and in it I took a waltz down memory lane and recapitulated all the posts from December 12, 2010.

Here is what I wrote about a certain one:

And, here’s a lovely, and interest-piquing, ‘education’ post from our own @sawatdeeka. How she’s kept this sort of thing up, for six years, without any diminution in quality, is a marvel.

Beautifully put – I had not quite understood Ricochet this way before, but your post crystallized much of my own previously-amorphous thinking on the value of this little corner of the interwebbies. Thank you!

I’d guess that about half the time I write my posts on Word first and then copy and paste to Ricochet, and the other half I do what you do – press “Start a Conversation” and write my post.

Thank you sawatdeeka. Your presence here makes this a little better place.

Well, when you’re talking to a blank document, you don’t have much to say, so you fill up the space with cliches. But when you know someone is going to read your writing in a few minutes, you quickly learn to cut out the fat so he/she will keep reading below the fold.

The immediacy of “Start a Conversation” motivates me to write and take care in what I say and how I say it.

Great post! As a fellow 7-year compatriot here, I resonate with much of this, particularly in my remembrances of my own “blog circle”, et. al.

Glad to see you here and still posting strong!

Sawatdeeka, great post. As iWe stated up above, you helped gel a lot of inchoate thoughts into a unified field theory of “why I like Ricochet.” Thanks.
