Breaking: Trump, Schumer, Pelosi Make DACA Deal

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi had dinner at the White House Wednesday night. Upon its conclusion, they announced that they have reached an agreement with the President to “enshrine the protections of DACA into law.” What isn’t included in the agreement? The wall:

We had a very productive meeting at the White House with the President. The discussion focused on DACA. We agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides.

Update: The White House responds.

Update II: POTUS responds.

We’ll see. Tax hikes on The Wealthy – defined by the Left as anyone who makes more than an elementary school teacher – are bad for any number of everyday blokes who make or do things the upper brackets consume.

Let’s start treating teacher’s summer vacation as taxable income.

Or maybe just deduct those three months from pension calculation.  In Colorado right now a teacher can work for 22 FTE years to qualify for a actuarily expected 30-year pension.  The pension is also the second-most frequent topic of conversation after cute colleagues.  Sorry, I was on the school board for two terms and rarely passed a clutch of teachers in the hallway discussing John Dewey or John Holt.

Okay, to be fair, the most frequent conversations were about ceaseless behavioral problems and a superb teacher is a gift from God.

So we’re progressing according to Scott Adams’ prediction that by the end of the year people will say that Trump is competent and getting democrat things done.

OK, then what are you saying.

That he’s a politician and we can’t trust anything he says. DACA is a selective amnesty. He’s already signaled his willingness to sign on to amnesty with his mote diggers cheering him all the way. It’s all BS. It doesn’t even qualify as bad theater at this point. You folks got rolled. It’s time to wake up and apologize to America for electing the other democrat in the race last year.

My favorite part of Trumps tweets this morning is where he claims the Wall is already being built because they are repairing existing fencing. In less than a year we’ve gone from a big beautiful concrete slab wall that Mexico will pay for to repairing existing fence on our own dime.

I want to point out that even I, who am a immigration hardliner in most ways, would be willing to give up on prohibiting DACA if all other aspects are revamped. No action on immigration is worse than DACA and border security.

We can manage a legislative DACA, but we can’t get the other things like EVerify and massive border security, etc without congress.

Also, GOP leaders have already signaled their desire to make legislative DACA. So, if you want to complain about Trump, how many other republicans are going to be criticized as well?

So, it all comes back to the deal. If Trump can make a deal that will get bipartisan support that includes everything except that it includes DACA, then that is a good deal.

If not, then Trump will not be reelected. Then again, neither will GOP congress members.

I remember vividly, this refrain from June, 2016 all the way through the late evening of November 8, 2016. It was as wrong then as it will be in 2020. With the growth in the economy and the markets that has been unleashed from the defeat of the socialism of the democrat party, the GOP will be the beneficiary and will have finally learned to work with their own President rather than against him in crafting necessary legislation. He will sign any healthcare or tax reform bill that they place on his desk. It’s in their court.

Well, I am hoping that many of the republicans get primaried so some new people can get in who have the stomach for controversy.

And, you could be right about the economic growth giving support to the GOP. However, I believe the economy may be in for another shake, what then?

Well, there is a difference between asserting “At least he’s not Hillary” and putting your index fingers in your ears and shouting “He’s not Hillary.  He’s not Hillary.  He’s not Hillary …”

If 41 GOP senators insist on E-verify, external/internal border security, and no chain migration windfall for “those who are at fault” they have the whip hand.

But do more than 11 GOP senators prefer to whip themselves over immigration?

Democrats, with straight faces, can insist on comprehensive immigration amnesty before enforcing existing law.

Republicans cower at using amnesty for millions as a bargaining chip to get simple tools to enforce existing law.

Guess who is going to win?

Ummm…..the tweets are from the president!  LOL   So his tweets are fake news now?   Granted, I think he is somewhat unhinged so they can’t be taken that seriously or as the truth but are they “fake news”.  When the US President makes a statement in any format I would consider that to inherently be “news”.

If you actually care about immigration enforcement, you will work to defeat Jeff Flake and Paul Ryan in 2018, and Donald Trump in 2020.  If you are only braying about betrayal in order to taunt those who actually want the laws enforced, today will be the high point of your outrage.

While I am certainly sympathetic to people in this program, I think the concern is that DACA will eventually change from work permits to green cards to citizenship. Either way, DAPA seems to have already been built on top of DACA, and doesn’t DAPA thereby grant a kind of status based on nothing more than chain relationship?

DAPA never took effect, though – state sued, got an injunction, the Supreme Court split and ended up upholding the injunction, and then Trump announced he was rescinding it (I assume he followed through and actually did?).  If DACA is made into a legislative action, then changes from work permits to green cards to citizenship would also require legislative action. I don’t see it sliding that easily and naturally from one thing to something else entirely.

I would be fine with DACA and DAPA if we abandoned the overall weird family sponsorship system we have, which I find ridiculous, increase immigration numbers based on needed skill sets, and put into place E-Verify, no wall required.

The family preferences had good historical roots, and made a lot of sense – they also ensured that new migrants coming into the country had a support network of sponsors that promised to be financially responsible for them so that they would not become public charges. There’s an argument to be made that it is no longer necessary, or should take a different form, but when national visas were limited by quota, it was a reasonably good way to determine who got priority.  Now that we don’t use national origins quotas, it’s reasonable to shift to a new system, though I imagine any points system would ultimately give some (perhaps small) credit for having close family already in the US.
