Breaking: Mag 8.1 Earthquake Hits Just Off Mexico Coast

Mother Nature continues her foul mood. An earthquake currently being reported as magnitude 8.1 has struck just off the southwest coast of Mexico. From the BBC:

The epicentre was about 100km (62 miles) south-west of the town of Pijijiapan and at a depth of 35km, the United States Geological Survey said.

A tsunami warning has been issued for Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama and Honduras.

The quake was felt in Mexico City, with buildings shaking and people running into the street.

One visitor to the city, Luis Carlos Briceno, told Reuters: “I had never been anywhere where the earth moved so much.”

Some electricity cuts have been reported in the capital.

No tsunami warning has been issued for the US west coast.

Mexico is also dealing with the Cat 1 Hurricane Katia threatening its eastern coast. Meanwhile, Houston continues it’s Harvey cleanup, Florida braces for Irma, and the Caribbean nervously eyes José. Prayers all around.

Can someone please tell nature to leave us alone at the moment?

I know that area of Mexico very well. I spent a lot of time in Tehuantepec and have close friends down there. The sociodad of La Ventosa a small village is right on the Gulf of Tehuantepec. I can only hope that they are all safe. There is a cliff above the beach and the village is nestled above the cliff. It is likely high enough that a Tsunami would not reach it. I can only hope for good news from the area once the dust has cleared.
