Contributor Post Created with Sketch. Breaking: Terror Attack in Barcelona

A terrorist driving a vehicle struck many pedestrians in Barcelona with 13 confirmed deaths at this time. Barcelona police have declared it a terror attack. From the LA Times:

A white van jumped the sidewalk in this city’s historic Las Ramblas district and crashed into a summer crowd of residents and tourists Thursday, killing at least 13, according to Spanish media. Police said they are treating the incident as a terror attack.

The Barcelona-based La Vanguardia newspaper reported at least 20 injured, and the Spanish newspaper El Pais quoted unnamed police sources as saying that armed perpetrators of the crash were holed up in a bar in Tallers Street. There was no immediate police confirmation of the latter report.

In a photograph shown by public broadcaster RTVE, three people were lying in the street after the afternoon incident and were apparently being helped by police and others.

    Jon,

Perhaps we can break off our fabulously significant sophomoric discussion of the idiots of Charlottesville, the fate of General Lee’s Statue, and Trump’s phrasing, long enough to notice a little more Islamic mass murder going on. Most of us barely noticed earlier when we averted a Nuclear showdown with North Korea that could have killed 25 million people.

That’s what I like about American political culture, its sense of priorities.

    Regards,

    Jim

I have just read that Spanish official are reporting only 1 dead but 32 injured. So hopefully (and this is bitter irony that this is hopeful) that number stands. Given that this happened outside of a Kosher Restaurant I think the probabilities are high it is another incident of Islamic terrorism. Now here is the question will this be the last gasp of ISIS, or will this be Al’Queda letting everyone know they are back on top of the terrorism game?

    Jon,

Sky News has live coverage. Two men heavily armed are said to be in a restaurant. They are evacuating all around it. The scene on the street is sickening (they’ve blurred out the victims) people are lying wounded all over.

How long since the last attack? What was it the London bridge right? With ISIS disbanding and being beaten back we should expect all their foreign fighters to come back. Most might just try to stay low and pretend like nothing happened, but far too many will want to continue the fight.

“Man deliberately drives car into crowd of people” would work as a generic description of either Charlottesville or Barcelona, so I’m not sure why you suggest that one is clearly higher priority than the other. Given that the former event took place on U.S. soil it’s not surprising that it would garner more coverage and commentary here.

    Joe,

First, a real terror attack is totally unprovoked and is on totally innocent victims which doesn’t describe anybody at the riot. If the police had simply broken up this riot when they could have, the escalation would not have happened. Second, we have spent five continuous days on this, parsing every phrase out of Trump’s mouth. During that same time the American fleet, air force, and missile defenses were in a dangerous Nuclear confrontation with North Korea. This childish tantrum over a statue of General Lee actually drove the threat of imminent Nuclear War off the news.

The riot in Charlottesville wasn’t a terrorist incident nor did it warrant the obsessive coverage it has received ever since. Charlottesville is more like political pornography. Everybody knows they are watching something stupid & dirty but they keep watching anyway.

    Regards,

    Jim

Clearly anyone who shows up at a rally to oppose Neo-Nazis deserves to die. What was I thinking?

Jim, Jim, Jim. It is you who has the misplaced priorities. As Barack Obama might say, don’t more people die every year from slips in the bathtub, or from having TVs fall on top of them? This is an acceptable and tolerable level of violence.

    Joe,

Clearly, anyone who goes to a demonstration armed with the intent of participating in a riot against the legal demonstrators isn’t innocent. Antifa has destroyed property, intimidated speakers from speaking on campus, and encouraged violence against police to the extent of police assassination.

For eight straight years, we have watched left wing violence and intimidation be ignored as if it was some form of protest. Gandhi & Martin Luther King were protesting these people are just criminal. The person who committed the crime in Charlottesville will be prosecuted. Have they caught the person who assassinated the New York police officer not long ago? You remember the woman, mother of three children, who was shot in the face while she was sitting in her police vehicle. De Blasio was busy going to a left wing idiot protest in Europe so he missed the funeral.

    Enough is enough.

    Jim

To paraphrase a writer I enjoy: there is a time and a place to complain about leftist violence and that is not after a Nazi just killed a person.

    Dubya,

Why thanks for reminding me of the moronic statistical argument that our former President regaled us with for eight years. Gee, I guess by Barack’s formula we shouldn’t be concerned until the number of people killed by fascists gets large enough. Wasn’t Barack’s spiritual advisor a former actuarial from Mutual of Omaha.

    Joe,

I think it’s time to stop this kind of nonsense. She wasn’t 15 years old. She well knew what she was getting into. I thought the mother’s comment was most revealing. She said, “they tried to shut her up”. I doubt that they had any idea who she was or that she was even there. The Antifa people vastly outnumbered the fascists and were aggressively surrounding them and attacking them. The guy who used the car was a lunatic criminal. No kidding. Would any adult think somebody who calls themselves a Nazi anything but insane? Why would you try to physically confront them in a situation where they are legally protesting? Do you think you are part of a special army that has a vigilante authority outside of the US Government’s authority? In America, you have the right to bear arms to defend yourself against attack not engage in vigilante political war. You must be a fan of Death Wish.

    Regards,

    Jim
