ACF #10 The Nolan Brothers

Hello, everyone! I am joined on the American Cinema Foundation podcast by Jason Eberl and George Dunn, editors of the book The Philosophy of Christopher Nolan. They are professors of philosophy with an interest in pop culture, and editors of many books on America’s favorite shows and movies over the last 50 years. Our wide-ranging discussion of Christopher and Jonathan Nolan’s movies goes through Memento (2000), The Dark Knight (2008), Interstellar (2014), and Dunkirk (2017).

My guests and I will give you asides on Aristotle and Aquinas, I think maybe some Augustine too, certainly Locke and Kant on morality and personhood, and we also discuss Rene Girard’s remarkable theory of mimetic desire and rivalry, and even an unnamed African philosopher. This is the sort of thing my guests have in mind when they talk about pop culture and philosophy and we hope to entice you!

Titus, can you ask them if there is any way to get a less expensive copy of their book? Even the Kindle version appears to be nearly $70.

Gah. I always forget that when I am listening on the open page, I cannot comment. Note to self: Must open new SoundCloud page before commenting…

Maybe ask a library to get a copy! Maybe one of the college kids with access to college libraries could borrow it? My academic interlocutors expressed regret that the publisher chose to go that way, but none of us could think of anything except those two possible solutions…

It is a bit of a nuisance, isn’t it! I’m sure tech will catch up with our natural tendency to respond, but not yet–it first has to become itself more responsive to us!

Yes, that is always a solution. Our library system has Eberl’s co-written Star Trek and the Wrath of Kant (very funny title) but not this one. I’ll put in a request for them to buy it for the library system, but I was considering it as a possible Christmas gift for eldest daughter.

Just got to the end of the podcast when you say these very things.

I for one would love to hear more of the three of you. Very interesting and enjoyable. (You helped me make dinner again tonight!)

It’s the least I can do. I know how good dinner gets!

Glad you liked it! We’re looking to record a few more things, even on the Nolans. It’s just a matter of timing…
