Sessions Out? He Never Was a Wartime Consiglieri.

Jeff Sessions, has recently been referred to by the president as beleaguered. Had the president known the AG would recuse himself about all matters Russia I doubt he would have hired him. Obama got away with murder by having his AGs obstruct, deny, and contempt their way through 8 years of scandals that were never looked at thoroughly.

Sessions can’t help with Russia. Sessions not investigating Clinton or the last admin. Sessions Sessions Sessions not not not helping with Trump’s Gordian knot. Bet he’s gone.

It will matter how it looks but Mueller and the dems need to be getting the same treatment as the GOP did during the Obama administration. Abuse. More abuse. Closed doors.

For all his faults Giuliani will do what is needed, he or another wartime consiglieri will be called upon.

If Trump is not guilty (and I believe he is not) then he needs to stop acting like he is.

If Trump has nothing to hide, he needs to stop hiding everything.

The Attorney General is not supposed to be, as Eric Holder put it, the President’s “Wingman.” Firing Sessions for putting the integrity of his office above the peace of mind of the individual President would be the worst thing Trump could do.

Bull. You celebrated his appointment just like everybody else did, but now that Dear Leader has decided he’s no longer useful, all of a sudden he never should have been hired.

But the idea that Trump is never wrong is a strawman, of course.

Sessions is a southern gentleman, not a fighter. I admire him but realize, unfortunately, he is not a wartime consigliere.

What is it with GOP attorneys general?  I remember rooting for John Ashcroft to be confirmed simply due to the people who were so vehemently against him, on the theory that anyone who gave Chuck Schumer such a case of the vapors must be OK.  He then (a few months after 9/11, IIRC) proceeded to launch a rhetorical and legal war against states legalizing medical marijuana, as if someone toking a doobie to help with a medical condition was as big a threat as international Islamic jihad.

Now, Session’s big agenda item is to double down on civil asset forfeiture, again in service to the federal War on Drugs.

I’m not attempting to argue the merits of medical marijuana pro or con, nor whether there’s a role for the federal government to play in controlling illegal drug manufacturing, smuggling, and distribution — those are separate issues.  This is a matter of priorities.  There are lots of things the DOJ could be focusing on that would both poll better and serve to protect individual rights rather than infringe upon them.

I know that Jeff Sessions is highly respected by many people, and I didn’t know much about him prior to the last six months, but every time I see him on TV he looks and sounds like a dithering little old lady.  Color me not impressed.

Sessions needs to go because of his stand on civil forfeiture, which is an abomination in a free and civilized country. And the fact that Sessions is okay with this unjust law says plenty about his ideas on everything else. His appointment was a grievous rookie mistake on Trump’s part.

Aww man I was hoping for an accusation of fake news.

How many more appointees will end up under the wheels of the Trump train before this is all over?

In my opinion, Sessions stances on the drug war and civil asset forfeiture make him a terrible choice for AG.

Who would be a good “wartime consigliere” if Trump just chuck him overboard?

Until you have the right team in place you have to cut out the chaff.

Indeed.  For that alone I’d love to see him sacked, particularly as he looks set to expand asset forfeiture and the drug war nonsense.

It could also be that he’s just reached his Peter Principle level.  Was just fine as a senator, but at this level he can’t play the game.  You can’t always tell with people how they’ll react once they get that promotion.

Seen that happen pretty regularly in business – guy has ambitions well beyond his skill level but plateaus for years because everyone around him knows he’s not capable of that next job up the rungs.  Well, he eventually gets his shot, nice promotion along with a pay raise, but fumbles badly.  Either has to take a demotion (which many people cannot easily do) or leave.

See I thought Sessions was the right team, at least that’s how it seemed when he was appointed. I’m not sorry to see him go if he does, but this is a dumb reason. The AG is Americas lawyer, not Trumps.

Agree on the drug war crap of course.

Anybody with a bulldog mentality.  Hire them through 2018 elections.  Obviously serving at the whim of this president is a different experience.

My reasons are to get tax reform passed and as much else as possible,   I’m sick of the Russia cudgel being the news.   Tax reform should be in the news.

We don’t have Americas lawyer since Holder.   We have a consiglieri.

I get your point and wish we had a non politicized office but I suspect those days are over forever.

This just goes to prove how much members of congress can effectively conceal of themselves, from the public.  I thought Sessions was a fine senator and a gentle mannered, freedom loving soul.  It turns out he was a just a police-powers thug, waiting to lord it over the public the moment he got the power to do so.  Civil Asset Forfeiture and Drug War fascism were his first selections out of the AG’s toolbox.  I went from liking the man to white-hot, adamantine hatred.

This kinda help, the President doesn’t need.

Yeah, I’m old enough to remember when Sessions was cited as evidence that conservatives were worried about nothing, and Trump really was going to hire the best guys.

By which I mean I’m more than a month old.

Sessions recused himself to avoid any appearance of impropriety due to his meetings with Kislak, innocent though they may have been. “Avoiding the appearance of impropriety” makes him stand out in the Trump administration.

Sessions came up as a prosecutor. He went after the KKK in Mississippi during a period where that could get you whacked, and that is not a euphemism for “voted out of office.”

Civil Asset Forfeiture allows the government to seize the property of anyone it suspects of any crime.  The person from whom the property was seized does not need to be charged with a crime, (much less convicted) for the seizure to be legal and binding.

Here’s the really Orwellian part: the property itself is presumed guilty of a crime.

It’s bad, because it’s a blatant violation of due process, and is on its face, unconstitutional. It would be better if people had to actually be convicted of a crime before the government could confiscate their property.
